What To Expect
Head out to Essaouira for an incredible musical experience from the Gnawa Afro-Morrocan group. This tour will be initiated with meetups at the designated meeting point for the trip.
First on the itinerary is a visit to the azaouia, the Gnawa people's temple where they are known to perform their traditional lila rituals. These rituals are specifically performed to treat scorpion stings, treat psychological illnesses, and remove evil spirits. Lilas usually last all night long until sunrise.
Next, be welcomed into the home of a kuyu or a Gnawa dancer. During your visit of his home, you will be able to enjoy a cup of tea and watch him perform certain moves during a Gnawa dance. The kuyu will also explain details of their clothing.
Another great visit during this tour is at the private quarters of a maalem or a Gnawa master. The maalem will teach you how to make the guembri, the lute-like instrument which is used mainly in Gnawa music. This is a great opportunity for a visit to their private spaces since not all tourists are granted access to them.
This tour will end with a listening experience of the Gnawa music at a local music spot and your tour guide will suggest spots for enjoying dinner.
