Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Basilica of San Francesco which boasts of its magnificent interiors and exteriors. Feast your eyes on the luxurious decorations that cover the basilica from inside to outside. The tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi can be found in a crypt inside one of this basilica's churches.
Next, visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara which is best known for the Oratorio del Crocifisso or the "Oratory of the Crucifix", a 12th century crucifix which was said to have spoken to Saint Francis in the past.
Walk along the streets surrounding the basilica to discover more of the city at your own pace during the allotted free time that you can enjoy by yourself.
Head out to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, basilica built around the small Porziuncolachurch. This church was where Saint Francis of Assisi renounced to live his life in poverty; starting the Franciscan movement.

Joined a local tour can save time and money to visit Cortona & Assisi. Two places are really worth to visit. Of course Assisi, need a whole day to visit if I have a plenty of time, so much to see. Next year 2019 I may be overnight at Assisi. Cortona is a lovely town and have a wonderful landscape. I am lucky I joined this tour. It was a bit expensive tour per couple but it worth.
