What To Expect
Discover the Jewish heritage, Moorish influence and Barcelonian identity of the city of Girona.
Girona may be overlooked when discussing Spanish tourist attractions, but this hidden gem shines brighter than anything else. Although it as an astoundingly neglected city of Spain, it will be ignored no more as you get the chance to explore its attractions by train! Girona is a valuable preservation of Spain's Medieval and Jewish past. Spot the brilliantly preserved Jewish Quarter, with its 10th century medieval road still intact and remnants of the ancient gates that locked in the Jewish population of the city at night.
See the Placa de Catalunya, the public square where so many great names in art, literature and history once walked. Among these famous personalities born in Girona were the writer Angel Ganivet, who drowned himself in the banks of Riga because of heartbreak from his lover Amelia Roldan. He is best known for his quote, "better a minute of real frankness and sincerity than a hundred years of hypocrisy".
The Carrer Sant Antoni Maria Claret pays homage to the venerated saint, who practiced his ministry in Girona. The saint was the creator of the Doctrina Christiana. As a child, he enjoyed visits to the Shrine of our Lady of Fusimanya, also found near the area.
