Foshan, which was founded during the Jin Dynasty, and given it's name in the Tang Dynasty, is a famous cultural city with a long history. As early as the Qin and Han dynasties, this was already a considerable village of people engaging in agriculture and fishery. At the Zhenguang Second Year of Tang Dynasty (A.D. 628), three Buddhist figurines were dug out at Tapogang in the city, hence the city was named "Foshan". In the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty, Foshan was already famous for it's handicraft, commerce and culture, and was an important trade port in Southern China.
After 50 minutes riding from Guangzhou, we will visit Ancestral Temple. It was built in 1078-1085, to offer sacrifices to Northern Xuantian Heavenly Emperor. The original building was destroyed in the end of Yuan Dynasty and was rebuilt in 1372. With it's long history and being the first temple in Foshan, it was called Zumiao Temple. Before the establishment of local administrative organization during the Qing Dynasty, Ancestral Temple was used for discussing official businesses, which was different from general temples. Its buildings and even the decorations and furnishings were given by various industries, mainly locally produced. Foshan is historically famous for casting and ceramic-making, with beautiful products presented in Ancestral Temple. It is a precious historic legacy of Foshan. Therefore, the international visitors praise Ancestral Temple as the Place of Eastern Folk Art.
The Nanfeng Furnace was built in 1506-1521, a rare furnace with a history of more than 400 years that is still in use today for making ceramics. Nowadays it is known as a Guangdong Key Cultural Relic Unit. According to the historical record, Foshan ceramic base first formed during the Tang and Song dynasties, which reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The ceramic products of Shiwan are popular in Guangdong and Guangxi as well as in other areas, and has the reputation of being the best tiles in the world. The mouth of Nanfeng Furnace is toward the south. At the back of the furnace, there are many banyan trees, which bring cool wind in summer, so the furnace was called Nanfeng Furnace. The Nanfeng Furnace fire has burned continuously for five hundred years, blending the spirit of the modern times into the ancient ceramic culture.
