About Heraklion

The historic city of Heraklion is the largest city and capital of the Greek island of Crete. Ancient buildings and museums dedicated to old Greece dot one of the country’s primary urban centers, while Cretan culture permeates the modernized atmosphere. Besides the hustle and bustle of the big city, a lovely waterfront and beautiful nearby islands make this a destination suitable for any traveler. Come to Heraklion in 2015 and book our tours and activities to make this an unforgettable experience to an ancient city.

Near the city of Heraklion are Knossos and Lassithi Plateau. Knossos is a great archaeological site that dates back to the Bronze Age, perhaps to 6000 BC, and is the oldest city in all of Europe. Upon the ruins of the old settlement was built a great Minoan palace, where up to 100,000 people may once have lived. This palace was the center of the Minoan civilization, regarded as the oldest civilization in Europe, and its murals and rooms bear testimony to how important it was to them.

After Knossos, proceed to Kera Kardiotissa, a monastery locally known as “Little Lourdes” that is run by nuns, and is devoted to the Virgin Mary. From there, ascend the Plateau of Lassithi, which may have once been part of an old volcano. The soil is fertile here and is irrigated by several windmills, one for each field of crops. Atop this plateau are small towns and groves. Go on to visit Dicti Cave and its unique stalactite and stalagmite formations. The mythological Zeus is said to have been born here. End your trip at a potter’s factory, where you’ll learn about the old ceramic art.

End any day with a cultural bang with a Cretan folklore night. Travel to Karouzanos, known as The Traditional Village, and participate in one of the nightly celebrations of local food, wine, music, and dancing, “Cretan Style.” Feast on the delicious cuisine, sample the fine wine, and learn how to dance with the many performers and their vibrant costumes.
