From Eleftherias Square (Freedom Square), continue through off the beaten path leading you to streets and neighborhoods to get a glimpse the city as local's perspective. Wander through the local market, sample some delightful local treats, such as barley rusks, olives and cheese, paired with a freshly brewed traditional coffee, and get a chance to chat with local shop owners.
A great vantage point to see how the walls divide the old city from the new city, take a walk atop Heraklion's great Venetian wall fortifications taking you back in time. Continue along the tomb and monument of Nikos Kazantzakis, the son of Crete, and learn what inspired him to write Zorba.
