Located in Guangdong province, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China like Hong Kong. Macau has a flourishing economy thanks to its gambling industry, which has been legal since 150 years. But even in its humble beginnings as a fishing port, Macau already showed its potential as a commercial center and a cultural crossroad between China, Japan and Europe. The Portuguese used Macau as a trading port, sparking what is considered to be Macau’s golden age. Macau received merchants from China and Japan and even Spanish colonies like Manila, back when Spain and Portugal shared amicable ties. Macau also played a significant role in spreading Catholicism as missionaries used the region as entry point to China and Japan. Eventually, the Portuguese took over Macau’s administration through the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1887. 112 years later, Macau’s sovereignty returned to the Chinese government following a Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration.
Remnants of Portuguese rule still exist to this day in the form of churches, fortresses and squares. These European colonial architectures and Macau’s pre-colonial temples are listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. At present, Macau continues to be a popular vacation destination with a booming tourism industry, owing to its hotel and casino resorts and its architectural and cultural legacy.
