About Hurghada Roman Mons Porphyrites Ruins / Ancient Roman Quarry

Explore the ruins of an ancient Roman quarry in the heart of the Eastern desert near Gebel Abu Dukhan (meaning Father of Smoke Mountain).

For more than 300 years, from 29AD to 335AD, the Romans have extracted an exquisite purple rock found nowhere else in the world from the desert. It was called Imperial Porphyry and was used to decorate the palaces of Emperors in Rome and Istanbul. A town grew and prospered around this industry. Explore what was left of it in the Roman quarry complex near Gebel Abu Dukhan (65km north of Hurghada). The complex is composed of houses, temples, shrines, wells, broken columns, and a few cracked stone baths.
