What To Expect
Be an explorer and go on the thrill of a lifetime in this jungle experience! You make the rules on this tour that lets you decide the activities you want and the length of your stay.
Our staff will meet you at the Luggage Claim area of the Iquitos International Airport where you will be assisted and transferred to our office. We will then brief you about what to expect during your stay, our services and some essential tips. You will be transferred to the Iquitos port.
Ride on the speedboat and arrive at the Heliconia Amazon River Lodge along the Amazon River! During the boat ride you can observe the turbulent brown waters of the Amazon clashing with with the dark waters of the Nanay river! Admire the small houses scattered among the massive jungle landscape.
There will be a short stopover to Monkey Island, a reserve for endangered primate species that aims to reintegrate the monkeys back into the wild. Gain new insights into caring for the environment and a newfound respect for Mother Nature.
After a 90 minute boat ride we will arrive at the lodge where you will be welcomed with an exotic jungle drink! You may check in your room and have your first taste of Amazonian cuisine for lunch.
Your first excursion will be a 2-hour jungle hike to Yanamono rainforest reserve where you will learn to identify several species of flora and fauna, including giant trees, medicinal plants and the lovely heliconia flowers. Experience sightings of the Turkey Vulture, Black Fronted Nanbird, and even families of monkeys. See your first Amazonian sunset as the day ends.
We begin the nocturnal fun with a boat ride in the jungle, with no lights! Enjoy the natural light from the jungle flora and fauna sparkling in the dark as your expert boat guide introduces you to the sounds of the jungle, amplified by the effect of the darkness. If it is a clear night, witness the beauty of the shining moonlight and constellations in all their glory which can only be viewed exclusively in the jungle. Then return to your lodge to prepare for the next day.
Rise along with the sun for the bird watching! We will go by boat to one of the several streams to see a plethora of birds. Species in the area are the Tuki, Ringed Kingfisher and Black-Collared Hawk. Return to the lodge for an invigorating breakfast.
After relaxing for a while, we will go on a native fishing expedition. Learn the local techniques for catching a fish and if you are brave, aim to capture Piranhas! Get the once in a lifetime opportunity to see the rare pink dolphin. Afterwards have your catch cooked for lunch when you return to the lodge.
In the afternoon we will go on a boat ride in Yanamono island to see the Giant Water Lily, the queen of water lilies that live in the shallow waters of the Amazon. Among the queen water lily is a court of smaller but equally chaming flowers.
When the night falls, go on the Nature Night Hike, an enchanting evening trek where you can witness the day making way for the night, turning the jungle into a strange new world. Make the acquaintance of the nocturnal jungle animals, like the stunning tree frogs, friendly snakes, and other creatures that go bump at night. Listen to the symphony of the crickets, birds and night owls before you head back to the lodge for dinner.
We will have breakfast, then go down to a riverside town to visit the Yaguas community to learn about the ways of life of the people who live in the Amazon River. Their simple yet fulfilling culture and traditions are sure to humble you and warm your heart. We will then return to the lodge for check out. After lunch, we will transfer you to the airport.
