About Istanbul Rustem Pasha Mosque

Set in exquisite floral and geometric pattern, thousands of vividly colored Iznik tiles decorate the façade, walls, and columns of this mosque. It was built by Rustem Pasha, who succeeded Ibrahim Pasha as Grand Vizier to Sultan Sulieman the Magnificent, between 1561 and 1563. The mosque’s architecture is just as breathtaking. Master architect Mimar Sinan planned the structure using the octagonal-based single dome design, a distinctly Ottoman architecture. A central dome rests on four semi-domes encircled by 74 windows, all of which are supported by octagonal columns called elephant’s feet. There are two minarets. Entrance is free but please do cover your legs, arms, and head and remove your shoes before entering.
