What To Expect
Journey to an informative adventure of traditional and modern medicine in Uganda. Explore the relationship between traditional health practitioners and medical doctors and how they cooperate with each other. Imperative to the local community, traditional medicine continues to be a huge part of the health system in Uganda resulting to the formation of a local health NGO, THETA, to collaborate traditional and modern health systems.
Start the tour with a walk to Katwe to meet and chat with locals. Along the way, visit the local blacksmith and see his collection of traditional household ware. Wander around the Nakasero Market, Owino Market, and the Old Taxi Park. Led by a member of THETA, pay a visit to three traditional health practitioners - a herbalist, spiritualist, and birth attendant. Providing you an understanding of the relationship between traditional and modern medicine in Kampala, the traditional health practitioners will demonstrate their practices and give you ideas on how it works. Then, take a look back on the history of Uganda by visiting its cultural and historical sites, such as Kabaka's Palace, Buganda Parliament, Court of Justice, and Uganda National Mosque, understanding how traditional customs developed into modern practices.
