Watch Kyoto come to life at night. Walk through its lantern lit streets and see how past and present blend into the night as you squeeze into busy streets lined with stores and restaurants.

  • Explore the night life of Kyoto as you walk through the streets of Gion, Pontocho and Teramachi
  • Traverse the serene wooden backstreets going to Yasaka Shrine and see how the district is eternally alive with lights and noise

Walk through lantern lit streets at Japan's city of tradition. Begin the night at Minamiza Theatre in Gion, the famed Geisha distrit. Walk through its streets and you may see Geiko and Maiko. From there, steer away from the crowd and head to the serene wooden backstreets through to Yasaka Shrine. The famous Yasaka is eternally alive, brought to life by bright lights and buzzing crowds, and lined with street food stalls selling Japan’s favourite evening snacks — everything from frozen bananas to skewered squid.

Dart into the backstreets of northern Gion, and walk through the narrow streets lined with smaller and more modern clubs and bars — a fascinating contrast to the quarter’s old buildings and historical air.

Cross kamo River and take in the sprawling view of Kyoto’s restaurant district as it stretches into the distance along the river, before crossing into Pontocho. Walk through the streets linesd with restaurant lanterns in all shapes and sizes. Pontocho is a century-old district lined with modern bars and restaurants, a continuation of contrast to the quarter’s old buildings and modern structures. Each restaurant has its own unique menu and atmosphere, but all retain an old-world charm.

Your next stop is Teramachi, a traditional Japanese-style arcade strip that stretches off into the distance. It is home to a variety of merchants and restaurants, from a traditional Japanese bookstore to brightly lit Manga comic shops. Find statues of ancient gods to high-quality sushi knives and vintage clothing.

Cap off the night as you head past Nishiki market to stop by tachinomiya. In English, it literally means "stand and drink shop", a bar with no seats that encourage food and drinks on the go. Perfect for snacking on your way back.
