Description

Day 1: Your local guide will pick you up from airport or train station and transfer to your hotel. Rest in the hotel for altitude sickness*.

Day 2: Start the tour by visiting the Potala Palace, a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is the spiritual center of Tibet is said to be the holiest destination for Buddhist pilgrims. It was named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of Chenresig or Avalokitesvara. Its construction started in 1645 by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, Lozang Gyatso. This thirteen-storey building measures 400 meter east-west, contains over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues, and soars 117 meters on top of Marpo Ri the "Red Hill".

After your lunch, we'll proceed for a visit at Jokhang Temple. Founded during the reign of King Songsten Gampo, it was said to have been built for the two brides of the king.

Next, we'll go for a walk at Barkhor Street, the most famous commercial street in Tibet and a must-see place for visitors before returning to your hotel.

Day 3: Proceed for a visit to Norbulingka, a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. Literally meaning "The Jewelled Park", it was built in 1755 and served as summer residence of the Dalai Lamas from the 1780's until the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in 1959.

Next, we'll proceed to Sera Monastery which is located at the foot of Tatipu Hill. One of the three famous monasteries in Lhasa, it is dedicated to the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect, a branch of Tibetan Buddhism. The name Sera means wild rose; the monastery was named so because the hill behind it was covered with wild roses when it was built.

Afterwards, head to the Tibet Museum. Inaugurated in 1999, it is the first large and modern museum in Tibet. It has a permanent collection related to its cultural history, including around 1,000 artefacts.

Day 4: We'll proceed for an excursion in Namtso. Literally meaning "paradise lake", it is renowned as one of the most beautiful places in Tibet. The area was created by a shift in the Himalayan tectonic plate movements in the Paleogene age. It has a surface area of 1,920 square kilometers, and is considered as the largest lake in Tibet.

In addition to one or two rocky outcrops, it has five uninhabited islands that were used for spiritual retreats by pilgrims who walk over the lake's frozen surface at the end of winter. They spend the summer there and are unable to return until it is frozen again. Chinese authorities no longer permits this practice today.

During summer time, birds such as Ruddy Shelduck migrate to this area.

Day 5: You may choose to extend your stay, or transfer to airport or train station in Lhasa.
