You will be picked up from your hotel in Lisbon for a private day trip to Evora. You will take a road by beautiful countryside of Alentejo.
The tour starts at the 'Igreja Sao Francisco de Assis' (the church of St Francis of Assisi), a Gothic church where you’ll visit 'Capela dos Ossos' (the Chapel of Bone). The famous motif at the entrance 'Nos ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos' ('We bones that here are, for yours await') is conveying a message of life being transitory.
You then move on to the 'Templo de Diana', (Diana’s Temple), classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, where you can admire Roman ruins. This was originally the city meeting place, built in the 1st century B.C. Not far from here, you’ll visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. Its style is determined by the transition from the Romantic to the Gothic.
Enjoy a free time at Evora to lunch and walk around, the historic center of Alentejo, founded by the Romans. It possesses a rich and extensive cultural heritage that has been preserved through the ages. Discover the city center in Geraldo Square, where you will be able to see the fountain that marked the original source of the aqueduct of silver water.
Following this visit, you’ll take the opportunity to stop off at 'Quinta de Sao José de Peramanca' (The Saint José de Peramanca Vineyard) with its magnificent baroque mansion buildings. There, you’ll be able to sample some of the best wines produced at the vineyard.
Your visit will end by a visit to 'Cromeleque dos Almendres' (the Almendres Cromlech). This is a megalithic monument dating back to the beginning of 3rd millennium B.C. This monument is considered to be the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest in Europe.
At the end of your tour, you bill be dropped off at your hotel.
