Description

Itinerary

Day 1: Lisboa - Sintra - Cabo da Roca - Cascais - Estoril - Lisboa

We will leave the capital and head to the majestic and romantic Pena Palace, an astonishing fairytale castle, located in one of the highest peaks of the Sintra mountain range. After a tour of the palace, we will have the rest of the morning for free time to explore the village of Sintra (declared a UNESCO Cultural Landscape), which enchanted Kings and inspired poets. Perhaps you can take some time to appreciate the several handicraft shops and visit tea-rooms to taste the delicious local sweets like the queijadas or the travesseiros. We leave for Colares, a region demarcated and recognized for its table wines, travelling through Cabo da Roca, the most western point in continental Europe. On the way, we will pass by the beach of Guincho and Boca do Inferno. We will enjoy the landscape until Cascais, where we take a glimpse of the fishing port. We will return to Lisbon by Estoril Coast, where we can have a panoramic view of the Casino and its gardens.

Day 2: Lisboa - Óbidos - Alcobaça - Nazaré - Batalha - Fátima - Lisboa

On this day we'll head north after breakfast at our hotel. Our first stop will be at Òbidos, a small village surrounded by medieval walls, with its typical whitewashed houses and wrought iron balconies. It is well known for its handcraft and the famous Pousada do Castelo. Then we will go on to Alcobaça to visit the church of the Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the longest and oldest Gothic church in Portugal, where we will visit the tombs of the famous lovers Dom Pedro and Dona Inês de Castro. Our lunch will be at Nazaré, a typical and colorful Portuguese fishing village. We will have the opportunity to go to Sítio, from where we enjoy a beautiful view over the beach and the ocean.

In the afternoon, we will visit the wonderful church of Batalha Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage site), a Gothic masterpiece with beautiful stained-glass windows. Then we will arrive at the Sanctuary of our Lady of Fátima, the center of Christian faith and world pilgrimage, to visit the Basilica with the tombs of Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, and the Apparition Chapel, heart of the shrine. If possible, we will have time to attend mass. We will return to Lisbon by the end of the day.

Day 3: Lisboa - Évora - Lisboa

We will spend the day discovering the town of Évora and its mosaic of culture, history and traditions. As we leave Lisboa, we will cross the bridge over the river Tejo. By a beautiful and bucolic landscape of olive trees, cork oak trees and vineyards we will arrive at Évora, a World Heritage of UNESCO. In the narrow streets of the whitewashed town of Évora we will spend some time at some of its most important monuments: the Roman Temple, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, Saint Francis Church and the "Bones Chapel," and the University of Évora. At the market we will find some of the fresh produce and rich flavors used to prepare some of the most famous delicacies of Portugal. During the visit we will also admire the diversity and authenticity of local handicraft with cork, ceramic and copper objects.

In the afternoon we will depart for Azeitão, where we will visit one of the oldest and most important wine cellars in Portugal. At the end of the visit, we will taste the traditional Moscatel de Setúbal.
