About London Stonehenge from London

With no written records, Stonehenge remains one of the most enduring mysteries of the prehistoric age. The identities and intentions of its creators still baffle scientists and archaeologists to this day. Some speculate that it was a clock, a device that measures astronomical phenomena or a spiritual healing and burial ground.  UNESCO added Stonehenge and its surrounding lands to the 1986 heritage list for its immense size, construction techniques and its prehistoric origins.

England has several stone circles set from thousands of years ago, but none so famous as the Stonehenge.Stonehenge was dug out from various sources using only flint tools and animal bones. The inner circle stones (roughly weighing two to four tons per stone) are believed to be bluestones cut out from the Preselli Mountains while the outer circle stones (ten times heavier than the inner circle stones) are thought to be sandstone blocks from the Marlborough Downs. How the creators overcome both distance and terrain problems is still uncertain.Transportation theories include the use of boats, glaciers and even manpower. The Stonehenge is a result of around 2,000 years of construction in several phases, each stone assembled with geometrical proportions and the solstice axis in consideration.Over time, Stonehenge was subjected to manmade, animal and weather damage, warranting the need for access restrictions. Entering the stone circles is not possible without special booking arrangements outside of operation hours. The stones may not be touched at any time.Until the 21st century, not much is still known of the Stonehenge story, but the fact remains that it took many generations to build over the course of a millenia. The evidence exists to this day, offering millions of visitors to England a rare glimpse of history and civilization as it was 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.
