What To Expect
We'll head first to the Longmen Grottoes, known as one of the three famous grottoes in China, located 16 km south of Luoyang, on the banks of Yi River. These grottoes contain the largest and most impressive collection of Early Chinese Buddhist cave art represented by well-preserved pagodas, carvings, and statues. The sculptures of the Longmen Grottoes are an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity. The high cultural level and sophisticated society of Tang Dynasty China is encapsulated in the exceptional stone carvings in these grottoes. The Luoyang Peony Festival begins from April 10 to 25; this is the best time to see the blooming peonies.
Next, we'll head out for lunch at a local restaurant before proceeding to the Shaolin Temple.
The Shaolin Temple is located in Dengfeng County, Henan Province, and is famous for Shaolin wushu (martial arts). It was built in 495, the 19th year of the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Visiting this temple will give you a better understanding of Chinese Buddhism and the Chinese martial arts. Among the sights that you will see here are the Pagoda Forest, the Dharma Cave, Shaolin Temple Martial Art Training Center, and a Shaolin Kongfu Performance.
