World Heritage Site Visit: El Escorial
Visit San Lorenzo del Escorial, situated at the foot of the mountain range Guadamara. El Escorial Monastery was built as a monastery and palace when Philip II had defeated the French army at the Battle of San Kintin in 1557 and is registered as a World Heritage Site.
Spanish Civil War Monument
See the monument erected to commemorate the victims of the Spanish Civil War in what is called the Valley of the Fallen. It was apparently originally built during the reign of the fascist dictator General Franco with forced labor of political war criminals from 1940 to 1959.
