Discover Spain's history by visiting El Escorial, which houses the Mausoleum of Spanish Monarchs, and the Valley of the Fallen, a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the Spanish Civil War.
Royal Monastery of El Escorial
Visit one of the Eight Wonders of the World, an imposing 16th Century edifice. King Phillip II ordered the construction of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial and it owes most of its design to its main architect, Juan Herrera. Many of the best artisans of that period contributed to its construction and the Monastery houses the Mausoleum of the Spanish Monarchs.
El Escorial, a symbol of the Spanish power in the XVI century that commemorates the battle of St. Quentin. It is also a mausoleum for Charles V. Due to the symmetry and balance of its construction, according to the humanist Renaissance style, for years it had been considered the eighth wonder of the world. The visit includes the Habsburg Palace, the Kings and Princes Mausoleum, the Chapter House and the Basilica.
Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen
The Valley of the Fallen is a monument built as a memorial of those who died during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Located in a beautiful valley in the Mountains of Guadarrama, this impressive work has a colossal cross over 150 meters high, and the Basilica and Crypt excavated in the hard rock under the mountain.
This tour includes the entrance to the Valley and the visit inside the Basilica.
Bilingual Guide (English/Spanish)
We headed out of Madrid early in the morning, and the drive was beautiful with the snow falling. It was the middle of March, so that was an added bonus. El Escorial is imposing and grand. The tour guide was informative and entertaining, and kept a good pace with the group. But the best part was the Valle de los Caidos. A befitting monument to the casualties of the Spanish Civil War. We knew it was hallowed ground at first sight. The cross in the middle of the white snow covered mountains was impressive, but the cathedral inside blows you away, both in size and significance. A befitting monument to the fallen of the Civil War. The equivalent of Gettysburg in the US.

Great tour overall! It started off a little odd, as our group was small and we rode on a bus with a different tour to be dropped o...ff and merged with another doing ours as well. I was the only english speaking person and that wasnt communicated well initially. Weather wasnt the best for visual at Valley of the fallen, but that is mother natures doing. You cant take pictures inside either of these, but that is what has kept the colors so vibrant. more

I did not know how controversial the Valley of the Fallen is among Spanish citizens due to dictator Franco being buried at the sit...e. The site is beautiful. El Escorial was also beautiful and we'll worth the effort to see it. Lots of walking up and down stairs at El Escorial. more
