About Manila Intramuros

Take a step back in time as you discover the 'Charms of Old Manila.' This is the old walled city, built during the Spanish colonial period. Before the bombings of the Second World War, Intramuros was among the world’s proudest cities—a splendidly preserved medieval city, the only one of its kind in Asia. Restoration efforts can only recover a fraction of that glory; nevertheless, Intramuros is truly interesting to visit. It features narrow, cobbled-stone streets, historic buildings and churches, convents, and charming restaurants. The golf course surrounding the walls used to be the city moats.

Built by the Spaniards in 1571, Intramuros used to be Manila. Inside its fortified walls was a wealth of grand colonial-style houses and churches. Unfortunately, World War II destroyed much of what used to be the world’s best preserved medieval city. In the 1980s, big-scale restoration efforts were spearheaded by former First Lady Imelda Marcos. A building code was also imposed, preventing modern-style structures from being erected inside the walls. The fact that modern Manila grew outside the walls of Intramuros also helped with preserving the Spanish-era ambiance if not the former glory of the old city. Today, Intramuros is a like a gem steeped in old-world elegance in the midst of riotous Manila. There is a feel of stepping back in time as soon as you enter through one of its many gates or puertas with names such as Puerta Real, Puerta Isabel II, Puerta del Parian, Puerta Almacenes, Postigo del Palacio, and Puerta Sta. Lucia. The Ramparts or bulwarks are still very imposing. Those who wish to walk on the 4.5km ramparts should arrange a guided tour at the Visitor’s Center. Visitors will definitely have plenty to see and do in Intramuros. · Take a walk or enjoy the Spanish-era atmosphere on a kalesa, a horse-drawn carriage with very big wheels. Get lost in the maze of kalyes (streets), calleons (small alleys), and plazas. Witness the curious pathos of decaying elegance or outright ruin populated by giggling schoolchildren and serious college kids and residents going about their business. Several old buildings and churches are now being used as schools and offices. · Enjoy golf on what used to be the city moats. · Dine and wine in exquisite restaurants that offer the best of Filipino and Spanish food. · Hear mass either at San Agustin Church, the country’s oldest structure, dating back to 1571, or Church of the Immaculate Conception, a Baroque Church declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.· Explore Fort Santiago, where national hero Jose Rizal spent his days before executed by firing squad at Luneta (the park beside Intramuros). Go down into the dungeons for a creepy experience or to the Underground Cell, where the bodies of hundreds of civilians and guerillas were discovered after World War II. · Visit the ramparts and the tunnels and dungeons of the Baluartes. There is an entrance to the dungeons of Baluarte de Sta. Barbara Dungeon at the back of the Fort across San Francisco and San Miguel. · Discover the ruins of Old Manila: San Ignacio Church, Audiencia, Ayuntamiento, Intendencia, Spanish Barracks, and American Barracks. Beside the ruins of San Ignacio is an old deep well. Here is a rundown of the attractions inside the walled city:1. Fort Santiago2. Walk on the Ramparts3. Manila Cathedral 4. San Agustin Church5. Church of the Immaculate Conception6. Casa Manila Museum & Restaurant (Calle Real del Palacio/Gen. Luna Street, Plaza San Luis; Tel +632 527 4084) – accurate reconstruction of a 19th-century house of a wealthy family7. Bahay Tsinoy – showcases the role of Chinese immigrants in the growth of Manila8. Palacio del Gobernador (now occupied by the Commission on Elections)9. Plazas (Plaza Roma, Plaza San Luis, Plaza de Roma, Plaza Armas, & Plaza de la Fuerza)10. Beaterio de la Compañia de Jesus (now serving as the Light and Sound Museum)11. Charming restaurants and cafes such as Ilustrado (744 Calle Real Del Palacio), Casa Marinero (General Luna corner Sta. Potenciana Streets), and Sitio Victoria (Gen. Luna cor Victoria Sts).

How to get there
By LRT1: nearest station is United Nations Avenue; take a jeep bound for “Pier” or a cab towards Intramuros. By jeep: (from Mabini St and Pedro Gil St) hail a jeep bound for “Pier,” get off at the Bonifacio Drive intersection; Plaza San Luis inside Intramuros is just 10 minutes away on foot; (from Quezon City) get a jeep bound for “Pier,” get off at Aduana St, then walk towards Plaza San Luis. Travel time from Manila City Hall to Intramuros is 10 minutes via public transport; from Quezon City, about one hour. Travel time is much less by taxi.

Opening hours
24 hours… Take your walking tour early in the morning though; the day becomes really hot at noon. Walking on the ramparts is only allowed during the day.
