About Marrakech Koutoubia Mosque

This 12th century minaret is Marrakech’s iconic landmark, 221 feet high and named after the manuscript sellers that used to hang out around it. Inside the tower are six rooms, one above the other, and a ramp that that runs around the interior leading to the balcony.

According to legend, the four copper globes decorating the top of the tower used to be covered in gold. The fourth globe was donated by the wife of Almohad Caliph Yacoub el-Mansour (1184-1199) for failing to complete the fast during Ramadan.
