Available: Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun
Pick-up: Available
Inclusions: Guide / Breakfast / Admission

A few things to be aware of before you book this excursion:
1) The road is very windy: consider ginger candy or Dramamine if you're prone to motion sickness.
2) Cell phone reception will be terrible.
3) It's very cold at an elevation of 10,000 feet. It was 40degrees for us. Dress warmly.
4) The air is also very thin at 10,000 feet: look out for shortness of breath and dizziness.
3) You may not see a picture perfect sunrise. No one can control the weather or even perfectly predict it. There will also be tons of other people there enjoying the view with you.

With all that in mind, we had a great time. At 3am, our driver picked us up and drop us off right in front of our condo in Kihei (pick up may not be available for your particular location - verify with PolyAd/GrayLine first if this is a dealbreaker for you). Stopped at a Kahului convenience store: buy snacks here if you don't like the pastries/coffee onboard.

Uneventful drive up. The 25-ish seater van/bus is heated, but once we arrived in the parking lot, our driver obviously had to turn off the engine/heat to conserve gas. We arrived 1 hour prior to sunrise, and in that 1 hour, the weather went from so clear and being able to see thousands of stars to sprinkling rain to so foggy I could barely see a few feet in front of me and back and forth. There is a tiny visitors center with giftshop, and restrooms (with ice cold water toilet seats), but not much else to explore. So we hung out on the bus until just a few minutes before sunrise.

The sunrise was partially obstructed by clouds, but the sky and landscape was still so beautiful. 30 minutes after sunrise, our driver drove us up a wee bit higher to the next parking lot for more photos, and then down to a golf course for breakfast. Breakfast was ok - I would have much rather saved my appetite for something else. We were dropped off at our condo at 11am.

We had a great driver and saw a beautiful sunrise from the top of a volcano. It was AWESOME.

My husband and I did this for our hunnymoon and it was great. Great tour guide. He was very good, funny and very knowledgeable.

This is a must for anyone traveling to Maui. Wayne was our driver and guide. He is full of all sorts of information and kept us ...entertained the whole trip. The view of the sun rising above the clouds high atop a volcano, made this one of our most memorable moments in Hawaii. The trip concluded with an awsome breakfast . more

Karla

An absolutely incredible experience!!!

Deb Stuckey

This was a completely unique experience. The beauty and grand experience of the sunrise over the volcano was breathtaking. Bob, ...our guide, was prompt, courteous and entertaining while being very attentive to the difficult road conditions. He also gave us suggestions about places to eat and things to do during our stay.We throughly enjoyed the tour and would do it again. more

Mark Adamski

This was spectactular! We watched the sun come up over the clouds at 10,000+ feet. Before the sunrise the stars were so wonderful.... We could see so many. The sunrise itself was breathtaking. This is an experience well worth the early wake up call. Bob is a very knowledgable and entertaining tour guide. I reconmmend you ask for him too!! This is an experience we will never forget. One that all visitors to Maui should do! more

My husband and I heard wonderful things about the Haleakala sunrise, and knew that it was going to be one of our activities on our... honeymoon. However, we knew that the bike tour option was a little more daring than we had hoped. After doing some research and finding this tour, we knew that this was the route we wanted to take.

The tour picked us up EARLY (just before 2am), and we boarded the bus. On the way up, our driver gave us the "disclaimer," that nobody can control the weather except mother nature, and it will either be crystal clear and beautiful...or...cloudy and disappointing. Luckily for us, it was, quite literally, PERFECT.

As the sun rose, the colors changed so beautifully and two native Hawaiians sung a traditional chant. We stayed for a few more pictures, then took the bus from the lookout point to summit (quick drive), then stopped at another lookout point before heading down to breakfast.

If you are going to Maui, make sure you take this trip!

This was an ultimate favorite trip with Hawaii activities. The most interesting part for us was the star sky and our two guides Gr...eg and Chris. They were so impressive good to tell about the stars and volcanoes. So Hawaii activities be sure to keep those two guys as loooong as possible. Worth every penny! more

Our guide Glenn was really great. Not only was he a excellent driver ( and the mountain driving can be challenging), he was very k...nowlegable about Maui, Hawaii and talked us through most of the tour. He was very polite, informative and over all was great. We were on time for everything and he kept everyone interested. I'm glad we chose to do this, because being our first time in Hawaii I would not have wanted to drive the mountain in the early hours of the morning. I would definitely go back again. The Haleakala sunrise and crater are a wonder to be seen. Thanks Glenn for making it even more enjoyable. more

Nick

We have heard SO MANY amazing reviews about this and unfortunately because of the government shut down (womp womp // politics <...sigh>) we did not get to go. However, I am still reviewing because we were devastated we couldn't go and Veltra was so helpful in assuring us of a full refund and gave us ample notice. Bravo to them :) SO disappointed! more

This tour was the best we have taken in Hawaii! Our bus driver, Bob Brown was engaging, making the trip in the bus fun and inform...ative. He gave us extras, taking us to another volcano sight! The food was delicious at the golf course restaurant we were taken to for breakfast! It was cold, so we advise that you plan to dress warmly with even mitten and hat! It is a five star event! more

Ron was an excellent tour leader and driver. The trip was excellent! Staff at National Park were full of information--especially ...Nan. Very cold--but I dressed as advised and was comfortable--hat, gloves, polar fleece liner under my unlined parka. Delicious breakfast at end of tour. Wonderful company with the others on our tour. Thanks to Ron and the others involved with this unique adventure! more

Diane

Ron was out tour leader. Excellent commentary as we drove from 3 am to 10 am. It was rainy and foggy as we drove up to the volcano... in the dark but Ron kept up the banter of telling us information while driving carefully and well. Driving excellent! That was a plus for me. Our group of 22 got acquainted over the trip. Great site to see sunrise at 10,000 feet! It was cold but I wore layers with warm polar fleece liner under my jacket, polar fleece hat and warm gloves and I was comfortable. I felt badly for those who came wrapped in blankets. Excellent staff at the National Park. Nan was especially helpful and informative. As we were driven down the hill, we could see the sites (and the curves) we'd missed due to darkness on the way up. The tour ended with a nice breakfast at a Golf Club. Memorable excursion! Thank you Ron and my fellow participants! more

Diane

It was a trip to remember and cherish. Amazing guide, perfect timing, perfect amount of information shared, nice breakfast.

Did on first day on island as already in time warp. Amazing.

Carol

so windy and cold up there. the sunrise was beautiful when it got there.Neil was a great guide. a wonderful experience

My husband and I were doing our 1 year anniversary during this trip. The crazy early hour was insane but well worth it. It was bea...utiful watching the sun rise as someone sang a native song. Our tour guide was amazing always had some new fact or funny story to say. He had us laughing quite a bit. Especially his jokes that would catch us off guard through the drive. "Men are from Mars women are from Visa" still makes me giggle. Now my husband is telling that to everyone! The breakfast was good at a local golf course. I'd go again only for our driver I think he was the best part of the entire tour. He was worth every penny. A great tour guide makes all the difference. Thank you! more

Ivonne and Gus

So we got up at 2am to get ready to get our bus. We took the bus up the mountain. We arrived and stepped off the bus to like 40 de...grees!! 40 degrees in Hawaii? Yes when you are 10,000 feet up!! Duh!! Forgot my jacket but bought some souvenir sweatshirts in the visitor center :) so remember your jacket.
We stood and watched the sunrise and it was worth being cold for an hour. What an experience. Will do it again for sure!

Letitia

Absolutely fantastic. Make sure you dress warm, but well worth it. Being above the clouds was cool

Tim

This adventure was so breathe taking! It was amazing watching the sun rise at the different intervals. Well worth taking the time.

Red Headed Sister's

Enjoyed this tremendously! The sunrise at Haleakala is as spectacular as everyone says it is.
Our guide (Bob) had a lot of ...
humour, was well-informed and passionate, and gave us the freedom to go where we wanted to during the actual sunrise instead of having to stay at a designated spot.
Included breakfast was decent too.
The early wake-up is well worth it. Don't miss this when you're on Maui.

I would recommend to book this trip instead of drive by yourself. You don't have to drive very early in the morning and there... are lots of turns. Our guide gave some very interesting information and local stories. more

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and that made an already great experience even better. The view at sunrise is incomparable,... and being able to see some of the unique plant life was an nice addition. The breakfast following the tour was quality, a real unexpected bonus, as it was great food at a quality peaceful and scenic spot. I would recommend this tour to friends. more

The sunrise tour starts early but it is totally worth it! None of the pictures I saw of the sunrise can communicate the shear beau...ty of the view. The sun creeps over the cloud cover and suddenly everything is lit up with golden sunshine. After that, they took us to the summit and a couple other places on the mountain to see the crater and then took us back down and served us breakfast. more

Paul

This tour was absolutely amazing! Not only did we have an awesome tour guide, Rory, but the sunrise was breathtaking! Rory got us ...there with plenty of time to spare and got us the best place to stand! He was so informative and passionate about his island! He gave us so much information about the culture of Hawaii that he didn't have to do. I can't recommend this tour enough! more

Brittany B.

Lovely morning at Haleakala. Was cloudy at first, but eventually the beautiful sunrise appeared. Breakfast was great and they offe...red a choice of three selections. more

Laura

We read it was a good idea to do this at the beginning of your trip so you're still on your 'time' due to the early... morning time frame. Even though you are going to nice warm Maui, it is very cold up there early morning. You are in the elements for about an hour, bring a jacket, blanket, beach towel, something... It's easier to enjoy the spectacular sunrise if you're not freezing.
Glen was a fun tour guide. We enjoyed our morning with Glen.
The view at breakfast was beautiful.

Zane & Kay

I was not looking forward to a 2:50am pickup at the hotel, but the transportation was very comfortable and Rory, our tour guide, w...as exceptional. He talked most of the way over to Haleakala about Hawaiian culture & traditions so it was informative. When we got to the observation area, Rory took us to 'the best spot' for viewing which also blocked off the wind that was blowing. It is strange at first because the darkness hides the landscape. But the stars were as beautiful as I've ever seen them. Then the horizon began to glow and things moved pretty quickly until full sunrise. We then moved to the 10000 ft observation area and the view was breath taking. Tour finished with a nice breakfast at Café O'lei and we were dropped back off at our hotel in Lahaina. This is a spectacular event and really different from other Maui activities. Pack some warm clothes! more

Our tour guide was named Rory and he was fantastic. As we drove to Haleakala Rory provided us with so much Hawaiian history, it w...as fabulous learning and hearing so much about the culture. Had a great time on our sunrise tour. Driver was knowledgeable and talked much of the trip. The sunrise itself was spectacular. ... You arrive in the dark and I have never seen so many stars. It is definitely a good idea to bring warm clothes. I had a hooded ski jacket and gloves so I was comfortable. After the very early start, we made our way to the top of the volcano. The tour drivers name was Bessie, and she was very enthusia...stic, sometimes going overboard. The sunrise was a bit late but the whole experience was great, but very cold. After the tour, we were taken for breakfast at a golf club, which was very nice. We then were loaded on another bus for our drop of at accommodation. This was a very slow time. We did not get back to the resort until 12 noon, and this turned out an extremely long day. more

We had a good time at the crater. We were a little bummed because we didn't get to see the sunrise but it is unpredictable an...d we understand that. It was still a great experience and we did get to see some sun rising behind the clouds.

If we make it back to Maui we would definitely try it again in hopes to see the sunrise the second time!

This was the first thing my husband and I did on our first trip to Maui--we did it the first full day we were there, and that turn...ed out to be best because we were sort of awake to catch our 2:15 am tour bus (we are from the east coast, and were very early risers the whole trip)

Our guide was very knowledgable about the volcano and surrounding area, and took us on a very nice tour. he even slowed and pointed out a pair of nene for us. On the downside, there were some spots we would have liked to spend more time, but this can't be helped with an organized tour. On our next trip, we'd likely do this on our own, but its smart to take the tour your first time.

Polynesian Adventure Tours was fabulous - great, knowledgable guides and they pick you up super early so that you get there before... the big crowd for a front row seat (it gets surprisingly busy).
BRING WINTER CLOTHES (if you think to book it before traveling) otherwise buy sweaters or a jacket or blankets or all of the above...the 3x suggestion of warm clothing on your "to bring" list is not kidding - i wore 4 sweaters and was just comfortable - pants, scarves, gloves a must!!!
Stunning views, definitely a must see

Bob was so entertaining and informative! He made the early morning quite pleasant. However, I think arriving at Haleakala 75 minut...es before sunrise was a bit too soon. Too much time to stand around and be cold. Also, the bus was a little small and cramped for leg room. The payoff, the spectacular sunrise, was exceptional. more

We were picked up at our hotel at 3:00 am as promised and then taken up the mountain to see the sunrise. We were lucky as it was ...a clear day and we got to see the sunrise without issue. Once we arrived at the site, we were given coffee and danish to warm us up. We then took our place with the others and saw the magnificent view. We then got back on the bus and went up to the summit to take a few more pictures. On the way down our driver stopped at two more scenic points so that we could see down into the crater. It was quite a view. At the end of the trip, we were taken to a restaurant on a golf course and fed breakfast. The entire trip lasted about 7 1/2 hours. My one complaint would be that the bus was small and the seats were very tight. Some of the taller and larger people on the bus really had to be uncomfortable for the entire ride as two people could not fit comfortably in one row and there was no leg room at all. more

Did this on the first day so it wasn't hard to get up at 2am since we hadn't adjusted to the timezone yet. I was glad w...e packed jeans, jackets, gloves and hats; we were still a little cold up there. But the sunrise was definitely spectacular.

We stayed at the Hyatt and there was some confusion on where to be picked up. Don't ask Veltra; call Polynesian Adventure Tours listed on the voucher directly. Our driver was OK; he had some interesting tips, but at 2:30am, most of us were just sleeping. It also would have been nice to know about the large viewing area right of the observation shack since it was pitch black when we got there. I would have expected the driver to mention this or give tips on where to view the sunrise. The Coffee and Danish was just OK; the system of having driver fix your coffee and hot chocolate was slow. The big breakfast on the way down was tasty, but slow to be served.

After that you make a long drive on a curvy road to the top of the volcano. Once there, it is FREEZING cold. What they don't tell you that you need to bring a very heavy coat. The day we went was pretty cloudy, so when the sun finally came up, it was too cloudy to see. After the sunrise, they treat you to a very delicious breakfast. The only recommendation I would have is to check what the cloud cover is going to be before you book this event. more

We had such a wonderful time! The food not so great.

First off our tour guide and driver Peaches was excellent. The view from Haleakala didn't disappoint and the breakfast provid...ed was tasty with a good range of choices. That being said the pick up was a complete nightmare. We waited for 60 minutes from 2:30am ( our scheduled pick up) until 3:30 am awaiting a pick up. We did not receive any word from the tour operator of the late running of the pick up service. The instructions on the ticket told us to call in if the pick up was 10 mins late, which we did. Guess what both the numbers on the ticket went straight to out of office voicemail, even the one labeled emergency! Thinking we had been swindled, we began google searching the tour company to see if others had been treated similarly. This search turned up a completely separate number for Polynesian adventure tours MAUI, as opposed to the main office number printed on the tickets. Ringing this number we finally got through to a gentleman able to help us and call the driver. We were told ( at this point 30mins past our pick up) that the driver had run into delays with late passengers, our pick up would be in 10mins. 20mkns later no one had shown up, we range back and were told they would be there any second, 10mins later in the cold, we were picked up. Zero stars for initial communication and pick up. 5 stars for the tour guide and sunrise experience itself. 3 stars overall. more

The tour on itself was nice, but no sunrise for us and that was a pity, but it's nature and with it you can't play.

Our tour bus driver, Nettie, was personable and knowledgeable but this tour didn't really measure up to info as presented in ...your ad: "We'll make an approximate one-hour stop at the "House of the Sun" visitor's center. Includes breakfast at one of Maui's premier restaurants after descending Haleakalā."
The "sunrise" that morning was dismal and I realize this is beyond your control. However, I was expecting the visitor center stop to be a more formal educational experience with a park ranger or naturalist; it was just a stop where Nettie took pictures of those on the bus. Breakfast was mediocre at best and the "premier" restaurant was actually a golf course dining area with a cafeteria feel. They actually weren't ready for us when we came down the mountain so Nettie drove to a "scenic stop" to waste some time. She actually did all she could to make us comfortable but I felt this tour was not worth the expense. Please include in your add that participants should bring chewing gum or ginger or will be able to purchase these things along with coffee or other beverages at a stop before the drive up to the summit.

We are delighted we got to have this experience. The view was breathtaking, honestly. That said, the driver/guide was nice but pre...tty frustrating. The tour picked you up around 3am, and the driver promptly announced he preferred to chat the whole way to the crater and turned the mike volume way up. Every person on that bus tried to sleep (it was 3am!) but he liked the sound of his own voice, and we heard his opinions on topics ranging from cyclists to what the beetles are doing now. He was nice, but frustrated every person and didn't seem to care ("haha, oh hope I didn't stop anyone from sleeping!") aside from that, I would have given a great review. more

The driver/guide that actually took us up the mountain had the worst, most monotonous voice. He droned on with almost no regard t...o the fact there were actual people in the bus and there was almost no interaction with us. Honestly I think a taped recording would have been better. The view was lovely and the breakfast on the golf course was nice. I also met some great people who we bonded with over the fact of our shock and mutual dislike of the tour guide. That guide sucked the life out of the tour. I've been all over the world and went on several tours while in Hawaii and can honestly say this man had the least appropriate personality I've ever seen for a tour guide, not at all personable. He had a lot of information but delivery and personality were so bad it couldn't come through. We had a very nice, energetic man who picked up up from our hotel and dropped us off with the bad guide...even though his accent was thick, I would have far preferred him to our actual guide. It is the only time in my life I've never tipped the guide but gave money to the guy who dropped us off with the guide! more

We regret to have expent so much money in this tour. Our guide was really good but we were too many hours in the bus just to reach... the top of the mountain. This can also be done by yourself, and it will be much cheaper more

It was a total disaster for us as we had to endure extreme cold, gusty wind, rain and sleet for over an hour and end up seeing not...hing. We were warned of the low temperature at the top of the mountains but was totally unprepared for how COLD it actually felt. I feel lucky that we didn't fell sick for the rest of the trip. I wish the tour company would show statistics of how often this happens so people can weigh their chances. more
