Built in the 12th century, the Alter Hof Castle became the seat of the Holy Roman Empire during the 14th century. The following century, however, saw the the Bavarian Royal family - the Wittelsbach, moving out for a more secure residence. Needless to say, the castle had suffered extensive damage, requiring restoration and/or reconstruction over the centuries. Today, a tourist information center is found inside the castle.
