About New York Rockefeller Center

Spanning 22 acres and covering about 19 buildings, the Rockefeller Center is the largest private corporate complex in the world: a stark symbol of capitalist power, a potent figure in urban Manhattan. A haven of Art Deco design, it houses New York’s biggest auction house Christie’s, oldtimer Radio City Music Hall, the NBC studios, and a diverse mix of other corporate tenants that define the prosperity and no-nonsense business philosophy of the city.

Designated as National Historic Landmark in 1985, the Rockefeller center is a larger-than-life private complex built by the Rockefeller Family. It is especially named after John D. Rockefeller Jr, who leased it from Columbia University in 1928 and undertook a massive development of the land during the Great Depression in 1929. Apart from being a center of contemporary artworks and premium auction items, the Rockefeller Center also shelters top business enterprises: the opulent Radio Music City Hall, the GE building, the Bank of America, and even entertainment bigshot NBC Studios (home of longest-running show Saturday Night Live). If you are a first-timer, you are bound for a bigger surprise with the underground Concourse, an interconnected series of pedestrian passages spanning from 47th Street to 51st Street, and from 5th Avenue to 7th Avenue. Along with a massive skating rink, it contains fabulous shops and dining areas of varying scales in grandeur. If you are in for a less consumerist treat, take a quiet stroll along the Garden Park or McGraw-Hill Park, which is popular for its beautiful walk-through fountain.
