What To Expect
The famed Metropolitan Museum's collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, now housed in a stunning and newly constructed wing, has been the prime focus of the museum in recent times. Our two-and-a-half hour seminar at the Met will focus on this unparalleled collection of classical antiquities, investigating the artistic heritage of Greece from prehistoric times to the wonderful variety of Roman art, as well as that of the Etruscans, who preceded the Romans on the Italian peninsula.
This two-and-a-half-hour walking seminar is led by a scholar of antiquities-either an archaeologist or classical historian, who possesses detailed knowledge of the collection and its context. With him/her as our guide, we'll plunge into the Met's rich collection of Greek and Roman art and artifacts. We'll discuss the development of the various styles throughout antiquity, concentrating on the various schools of Greek vase painting from 7th to 4th century B.C.E., and classical sculpture of the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.E. by famed artists such as Polykleitos. The Met's reinstallation of Hellenistic and Roman art will allow a close investigation of its eclectic nature through major artworks of the era, including well-known oeuvres of Hellenistic sculpture, Roman Imperial portraiture, funerary sarcophagi, and Pompeian wall painting.
The goals of this seminar are not only to acquaint ourselves with the major genres of Greek and Roman art and be able to recognize the characteristics of the artworks of different periods and places, but also to explore thematically the common subject matters expressed in Classical art: Greek mythology, religion and ritual, Roman Imperial propaganda, as well as everyday genre scenes. Throughout the seminar, up-to-date scholarly methodology in studying such wondrous works of Classical heritage will also be introduced, both in their technical and theoretical frameworks.
