It is unfortunate that sharks have gotten the label of being mindless eating machines that attack anything that twitches in the water. I was able to experience first hand just how wrong this stereotype actually is. The moment we arrived, sharks began to make there way to us. The regulars, the Sandbar Sharks, are attracted to the sound of the boat engine and quickly swam up to say hi!, but then an unexpected visitor decided to drop by. My jaw literally dropped when I saw a HUGE tiger shark circling the boat. Then another came by...then ANOTHER! We were lucky since Tiger Sharks are fairly rare. As the first four made there way into the shark cage, the remaining four, including me, waited on board and watched the sharks from the surface. These creatures just circled the cage and boat and at times a Tiger Shark would pop his head out of the water to munch on some fish. This shark could have easily bitten the crew member, but all he (she?) did was nibble and go. If anything, it

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get seasick?

If you are prone to motion sickness, yes you will. During the shark encounter, the boat is drifting with the engine off. Even on the calmest days, the boat never stops rocking. If you plan on taking something like Dramamine, read the instructions. It must be taken in advance. Fortunately, if you get sick, the tour is only two hours and land is an instant cure. Even those that get sick have a tremendous time.

Do I need experience with scuba diving or snorkeling to go inside the shark cage?

No! You only need to be able to climb down a short ladder and hang onto a handrail. We get many people that don't even know how to swim!

Can I go out on the boat, but not go inside the cage?

Absolutely! There is not a bad seat in the house. From the boat you can see the sharks swimming near or on the surface with their fins slicing through the water. Of course the best view is from inside the cage.

What kind of boat will be used?

A 32-foot long, ten-foot wide Radon built on the Big Island. This vessel is well known for its seaworthiness. Coast Guard certified to carry 18 passengers. Powered by a 450 HP Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine, she is a very reliable vessel with a top speed of over 20 Knots. Creature comforts include hot water shower and refreshments.

What if I have a great fear of sharks?

No problem. We have had many people on board that were terrified. Within a few minutes of being inside the cage you will be completely comfortable. We have seen it many times before. Seeing these magnificent creatures and how they behave will change your attitude and ease your fears forever.

Is there a money back guarantee?

Yes, if you don't see sharks, you don't pay!

Are there photo or video services available on board?

Yes, GoPro rentals are available for $50 per rental and includes an SD card with a collection of digital photos from your tour.

There are also one time use underwater cameras for sale and a Shark DVD (previous tour footage) that shows the whole experience plus a selection of the best shark images.

Is there anything else to do in the area for those in my party that are not going on the boat?

Absolutely. The harbor is surrounded by beautiful public beaches. The harbor is located within walking distance of lots of great shops and site seeing in Haleiwa town

Wow, wow and wow!!!! This was a truely amazing experience. To be that close to sharks in the water, to look them in the eye and ...feel their distain...... what a feeling. For anyone thinking of doing this trip, I seriously recommend doing the 7am dive, especially if you're going while the Tradewinds are still blowing. It was a little rough when we were out there and it would have been much worse later in the day. Also, if you've never snorkelled before, buy yourself a mask and practice for a couple of days beforehand, its not at easy as it looks. You'll get much more out of it if you know what you're doing with your mask and snorkel. more

Great activity!! We saw so many sharks ranging from 4-15 feet long. We were lucky enough to be in Hawaii at the right time to se...e tiger sharks. more

Lorely

I cannot stress enough how fun and exciting this activity was! I went on the early morning boat out to see sharks on a rainy, gra...y morning and was THRILLED to see sharks from the boat before ever getting in the water. BIG ones. SCARY ones. But I got in the cage anyway and was then floated out behind the boat with other shark fans. The sharks swam all around the cage the entire time - so close I could reach out and touch them if I dared. I took all my underwater pictures with my disposable camera in about 3 minutes! This was just an incredible experience, which I would love to do again. It was nice to be underwater with them (snorkeling) where you could watch them so closely, although you don't have to get in the cage if you don't want to - you can see them from the boat. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! more

Sandi

Absolutley fantastic!! We couldn't believe just how close you get to the sharks. An amazing experience

Paul Jones

Great trip, with a very knowledgeable captain and crew. Bring your underwater camera for some pictures of a lifetime,,,, so you t...hink! You will be back to enjoy this again. Visibility was well over 50 feet and the water was a crystal clear deep blue. When you are in the cage you are totally protected and safe, yet as the sharks come so close you feel as if you are out there with them. The only bad thing for me were the pretty high waves, which made it difficult to hold the camera still. (As seen from the pictures) This experience is on the 'To Do on the next trip' list. Thanks everyone involved more

Dr Bob (From the UK)

I have done this shark encounter twice now and it does not disappoint!!! Ever come face to face with a tiger shark? Here is your... chance. Do it and you will not regret it. Besides, it gets you out of the hectic city of waikiki/honolulu, and the best bragging rights ever with your friends!!! more

Derek Anderson - So Cal

this is definitely not for the faint of heart! Although sharks do NOT like to eat humans (as it is commonly believed)! It is very ...exhilarating to watch them all around you. We would recommend it to anyone looking to have the experience of their lives! more

ErikanMichael

The first major activity my friends and I did during our 4 day stay on Oahu and I have to say it was an amazing time, and definite...ly worth the experience. more

Not to miss!

My sister and I had a great time and would love to do it again in the future. There were more sharks than we thought and they were... great to look at, thanks more

John H

Saw lots of sharks, and very close. Guides were informative and fun. Great experience.

Dan n Claire

This one of the biggest thrills I have ever experienced, and there has been alot, we have traveled all over the world and this is ...most definately in the top 5 for us. To have a shark 8-12 feet long inches from your face, let alone 15-20 of them within 20 feet of you is extreme, then add in some good sized swells to add to the excitement, I wouldn't miss it again, ever, a must for anyone who needs a thrill. more

John Simonsen SLC UT

This adventure delivers on exactly what it offers. If you've seen the shark specials on the discovery channel this will be ve...ry similar except for the fact that YOU are up close and personal with the sharks. Bring waterproof camera for great shots. I didn't have one but I brought my live action camera and filmed some great footage from on the boat. more

Jose

This experience was the best thing I have ever done in my short time on this earth! Even though I was seasick I still had the time... of my life. The captain made sure everything was as safe and controlled. These sharks were not aquarium sharks! These beautiful creatures were enormus, full of spledor and power. I was amazed to see in real life. If or when I return to the island I will do this adventure again. Don't miss the opportunity to get in the cage you only live once, Seize the Day! more

Rob

Complete adrenaline rush!!! Would definitely go again and again!!! This coming from first timers!!! Although the water was very ch...oppy, you felt safe in the cage. Just remember to be on the safe side, keep your feet and hands in the cage. You spend more than enough time with the sharks. The guides were friendly and informative. As we were leaving, a booby bird flew in and decided to hang out on the cage. We were also able to see a school of dolphins swimming by. We never did get anything to drink so, you might want to bring a bottle of water along. They also sell a Shark Encounter T-shirt which is pretty cool to wear and it let's everyone know of your experience. Remember to bring a waterproof camera as you'll want to take up-close pictures of the sharks!!! more

a fantastic experience! i really recommend this activity u cant explain the feeling u get when ur underwater and face to face with... a shark! heaps more sharks around than i expected and they captivate u for every second you're there! amazing!!! more

Very very nice! The sharks were much bigger than I thought! Professional and fun people having the tour

Sandra Nilsson

This was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I was kind of nervous but the staff makes you feel at ease. There were s...o many sharks and you get at least a half hour in the tank. It's a nice view from the boat when the other group is in the cage. Sharks are amazing and beautiful creatures. Make sure you take some Gravol before you go. I got very seasick and I usually don't ever get sick. I will definately be doing this activity again when I come to Hawaii. more

Amy

This was definately the highlight of our vacation. The thrill of being so close to the sharks is an awesome experience. Would hig...hly recommend this adventure to everyone! more

Nancy

My wife and I loved the shark encounter! Exhilarating but not dangerous. The staff was knowledgeable and good spirited. We are in... our mid 50's - have done lots of stuff and this was truly unique. Besides loads of sharks we also saw a couple whales. Recommend you bring a water proof camera [taking digital videos and pulling frames for desired stills works best], go early because the water is usually calmer, and go on an empty stomach. The time in the cage went too fast me! more

JRM from Pa.

We didn't get any refreshments. And we recommend that you bring your own snorkling gear. Other than that we had an AWESOME ti...me!! This is such an experience. I love sharks and this is as close as you can get with out being eaten...hahaha. We loved that there were so many sharks. We took so many pics and video's. We will be back again to do this!!! more

This was a brilliant trip and definitely one of the highlights of my holiday. To be just inches away from a 12ft Tiger Shark is a ...remarkable experience. Also got some brilliant pictures with my underwater camera. Loads of big sharks, crystal clear waters, friendly and knowledgable staff - a real must-do! more

What a great experience our dive was. Thank you, for making my first trip to Hawaii and my first dive with sharks the best. I enjo...yed every part of this encounter from the staff to the sharks. We would love to do it again someday. Aloha... more

You have a list called "10 things to do before I die" and you've just marked one thing as 'done' - this i...s what this tour feels like. Do it, and you won't regret. Just don't forget a pill of Bonine and waterproof camera with a long strap that you can put around your neck. If your camera is not waterproof, take it anyway, because you can take great pictures even from the boat. more

Yulia

So glad we did it!! Kids loved it. Thrilling. Captain Rich & Cory were very informative & friendly! What a trip!

Unforgettable. Amazing. Incredible. Awesome. Those are just a few! This was truly an adventure of a lifetime. Enjoyed every second... on that boat. more

Mr. Anonymous

Totally awesome!!!! Let me tell you, I am one of those people who respect sharks so much, I try everything to stay away from them.... I am enthralled with sharkweek on Discovery channel, but terrified of sharks. I was very hesitant in taking this tour, however believe it or not I'm the one who signed my wife and I up for it. I'M GLAD I DID! What an amazing experience. The staff were cool and kept things low key, didn't make any problems for anyone. They both were knowledgeable regarding the sharks we encountered. The only thing I would ask to change would be the viewing glass, not as big as I would have liked it, but then again I'm selfish. The other thing I would ask they enforce, or at least remind those in the cage, please don't let your legs go straight out. I kept getting kicked in the back cause the lady thought she could just hold onto the handrail and let herself strectch out...very annoying. Aside from those things...I'm definately going to do this tour again when I co more

My buddy Jim and I took this tour and we were completely overwhelmed by how incredible the experience was! We have amazing photos ...from our underwater cameras to show all of our friends and we were astounded by the number of sharks we saw. This is a must for anyone visiting the islands. My wife and I agreed this was by far the best thing we did while we were there. ...The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. The trip itself was a blast! The sharks were so cool to look at. Seeing them in person is just beyond words!! more

Mr. Anonymous

There isn't a whole lot of words that can really express the experience of looking face to face with a bautiful shark.. excep...t AMAZING!! the whole activity from begining to end was great, the staff knew what they were talking about and eventhough we were to dumbfounded to really talk a whole lot they covered all our questions...we would recommend this activity to anyone. more

craig + christina

we had a great time, lots of sharks....

jeff roberts

I thought I was going to be scared, but they made sure I was at ease. We go in a little deep, and the reality hits you when you se...e the cage. It was windy that day, and we got some waves. Once you get into the cage, and you get up close with these sharks, you see how amazing they are. I would highly recommend this to everyone!! Very cool!!!! more

Carina

haha, yes misleading title, BUT what an event! the sharks were amazing and the staff were awsome. The staff know so much about the... sharks and ensure ur safety at all times. You get a long time in the water, and lots of views of sharks and small fishes. I recommend going as early as possible to avoid waves as it was hard to breathe at times; and we took the 10am outing! Sign the petition they offer you at the end because wildlife groups are trying to shut them down, and they are in no way harming these amazing sea creatures! have fun! more

HONEYMOONERS!!!!

Swimming with the sharks was awesome with Hawaii Shark Encounter..... I liked how the boat was smaller so it was our family and 1... other group. We saw at least 15-20 sharks and they swam very close to us. The cage was a good size and you were able to move around freely. It was surreal being under water with the sharks. I would recommend if you have an Iphone to get the case so you can take the iphone under water. We had an old school underwater camera and it was difficult taking pictures with it and holding onto the cage. We will see if any of our pics turned out. In summary highly recommend this activity and Hawaii Shark Encounter was great!!!! more

Shawn Driscoll

Staff were a crack up and made the whole trip full of laughs. From the moment we got out on the boat we saw dolphins and whales so... it was a bonus. Sharks appeared right away when you travel a bit further out so it was good there was no waiting around or searching like other tours. The experience was amazing. The staff kept the nature of the sharks a mystery untill you finish your turn. Only then do they tell you that the sharks are complete pussy cats and have never attacked anyone. This added to the adventure and adrenalin rush of the experience. Inside the cage you see LOTS of LARGE sharks. We had 6 sharks surrounding us. Highly recommended! more

Mr. Anonymous

our adventure was awesome, first i didnt think that we were going to see any sharks, but as soon as our boat arrived at the cage, ...about 15 good sized sharks circled the boat. being in the cage seeing the sharks up close was amazing> more

Staff were amazing and made the adventure perfect. Awesome experience shared with my nephew. Coming back to Hawaii in April and wi...ll be doing this again for 3rd time! Sea was really rough but made it all so much more fun, was given option to change days or refund but so glad we decided to go ahead, was a fabulous day. more

An amazing experience. Even though the water was extremely rough the day we went, it was still incredible. Our guides were the bes...t too. more

Could not have been better; we specifically chose this shark encounter since they book fewer people on the boat and it was just wh...at I had in mind. We had 10 total on the boat. The captain and mate were both knowledgeable and professional but definitely made it fun. Took a few extra minutes to show us the whales also. Highly recommend these guys. more

Today me and my husband take part in shark encounter-u have to try it!!)) Actually we thought we'll get more adrenalin, but i...t turned out it's really safe and exiting trip. Like a "bonus" we saw wales and dolphins, and crew of the boat told a lot interesting facts about sharks that we didn't know. For sure u have to take go pro with u and a camera just in case ull see wales) more

Anton&Natalia

My kids said this was the experience of a lifetime! Water was a little rough so if you suffer from sea sickness I would recommend ...medication but the overall experience was worth every minute. We did some sort of excursion almost every day and my family loved this!! more

Amy Dean

It was really amazing. The guys were really nice and funny, answering every questions. We stayed really long in the cage and at no... time we felt unsecure. We saw many sharks all around the cage and coming close to the boat. If you can, ask for them to take the pictures with a gopro, they'll be a lot and you won't have to worry about it. more

Sarah

this is definitely the activity for you. The staff aboard the boat are very friendly and knowledgeable (thanks Jeremy and Phillip...!), and there WILL be sharks. I've actually been on a dive with sharks without a cage, so this wasn't as breathtaking for me, but if you've never seen sharks in the wild, I highly recommend this activitiy. more

Aaron

The staff said they counted 15 sharks down there with us and they were all over. It was really neat to get that close to a shark. ...They were there the minute we got in and put on a good show. Only downside though was that off shore there was a storm off island that were creating a lot of big waves and half the boat got seasick. Take the dremamine when they tell you and it should be a great time. more

boogwa

Awesome but expensive for what it was ...... 113$ for 2x15mn of boat and only 20mn in the cage with sharks, too short....

Mr. Anonymous

Beautiful calm day, lot of fun and the staff was great. I've dived with sharks before in open ocean so this was a little tame... in cage. But nice to see Galapagos sharks. Everyone had a good time as one doesn't have to be a diver. more

DiverBob

Getting in the water with sharks was definitely a unique afternoon! Our hosts weren't especially talkative but knew what the...y were doing and we all got a turn. If you're going to get in the water with sharks I suggest this company because of the plexiglass on the side of the cage. None of the pictures I took through the bars turned out because of the light reflection! Also arrive early to the dock! The sign is tiny, faded and at the far end of a parking lot. Took us 20 minutes to find where to go after arriving. more

Lin

We made this a family affair. My two kids, 16 & 6 enjoyed the sharks. The water was rough and it was very hard to hold onto th...e cage. I had to hold my 6yr old, he was not strong enough to hold on himself and the waves knocked him around. That said he loved it. My 16 yr old had no problems and tooks some great pics with the underwater camera. The sharks came right up to the cage and they looked them eye to eye. I tend to get sea sick so I wore a sea sick patch, which unfortuntly was not enough. The worst part was sitting in the boat while the other group was in the cage. Everyone agreed that they would do it again, but compared to some of the other tours we did, this one seemed a little pricy. We were only out for about 1.5 hours with about 15 - 20 minutes in the cage, which was just right but per minute - expensive! more

Hawaii Shark Adventure was one of my top activity during a 9 day Hawaiin vacation.activity. It does not beat sex; but I ski double... black diamond runs in Colorad and Utah with over a foot of fresh powder and the Shark Adventure rivals that feeling of exhilaration and adventure. A short 15 minute boat ride from the Harbor to the location and then 20 minutes inside the shark cage. I counted over 9 Galapagos sharks swimming around (and under) the cage. Great photo oppurtunities (I got several great shots of just sharks under the water as well as looking at them from the boat). I would recommend this activity to my friends, family, and anyone in good health. My only only advise is for better viewing and photo opps; you need to take a deep breath and go to the bottom of the cage to avoid getting bumped and elbowed by the other guests (not to mention their hands of elbows getting into your photos). more

Sam

we met 1 shark, very good experience. but the timing we chosen wrongly, too early in the morning makes us freezing. no place to ch...ange in the ship, so you have to settle with your towel and change only when you reach the land. more

My husband and I wanted to do something very unique for our honeymoon in Hawaii so we decided to do Shark Encounters! We were both... very excited to do this. On the day of, we drove up to the northshore at 430am because we booked the 6am group. On arrival, the staff were very friendly & knowledgable. However, my husband and I were motion sick the whole entire time that we were out at sea. We did not enjoy this at all. We even took gravol to control our motion sickness but it did not work. When we got into the cage to see the sharks, we were still having motion sickness. It was nice to see the sharks close up but it felt like we were sick the whole entire time. Overall, it was an experience that we would never do again. more
