About Oaxaca

Visit Oaxaca, Mexico, whose historic center is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and venture into a land filled with colonial-era treasures and native archaeological and cultural sites. Add a little history to your 2015 travel calendar with our Oaxaca tours and activities.

Take a city tour of the so-called “la Verde Antequera” and see the lovely capital of Oaxaca state. Visit the historic center with its 26 structures from the colonial days, five convents, and various civil structures, all of which showcase an architectural progression from the 16th century to the modern day. Go on a walking tour of the central market, where Oaxacan regional dishes can be found, as well as large hot chocolate cups with spices. Later on, visit the Government Palace, built in a unique style that combines a nationalistic streak with architectural elements from Mixtec and Zapotec designs. End the tour at Oaxaca Cathedral, built in 1733 atop the earthquake-devastated ruins of two much older cathedrals from the 18th and 16th centuries.

Travel 9 km out of the city to the hill top site of the ancient city of Monte Alban, once the capital of the Zapotec people. Be guided all throughout the trip by a bilingual tour guide as you witness the Great Seat and its buildings used for old ceremonial purposes. See the court where the ancient Ball Game was played. Move to the monumental South Platform and admire the beautiful Palace of Monte Alban, as well as the Call Observatory.

Expand your trip beyond Oaxaca by going to Mitla and El Tule. Here it is said that the Zapotecs and Mixtecs encountered each other. Observe the elaborate mosaics and designs that are completely unique to this archaeological site, with influences from both native cultures. Also see the great Tree of Tule, an ancient tree approximately two thousand years old, with the stoutest tree trunk in the world.
