Famous for being the home of the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a historic city where centuries-old colleges educate a constantly young population. The site itself of the city dates back to around 900 AD, when a river crossing was established to facilitate oxen traveling across the water, resulting in the name “Oxenaforda” or “Ford of the Oxen,” and grew importance over the centuries until the establishment of the original facilities of the University of Oxford in the 12th century. Today the city is steeped in history, centered on its university but including the rapid growth of its printing and publishing industry in the 20th century, and its student population lends a youthful cosmopolitan atmosphere to what would otherwise be a more reserved heritage site.
