About Paris Palais Garnier - Opéra de Paris

The French composer Charles Debussy compared Charles Garnier's masterpiece to a train station-meets-Turkish bathhouse. The Palais Garnier may have been something like an oddity before but it would soon define what an opera house should be: grand, imposing, opulent and highly decorative. This iconic building in the heart of Paris represents 19th century Beaux Arts architecture at its best with a grand double staircase 30-meter high, a green, gold and marble facade dominated by statues of Greek deities and great composers, a glittering foyer bathed in even more gold from the chandeliers down to the pillars adorned with allegorical ceiling and wall paintings by Baudry. The centerpiece is a five-tiered 1,979-seater horseshoe-shaped auditorium with a 8-ton crystal chandelier hanging below the colorful dome painted by Marc Chagall.

Not just a celebrated Parisian monument, Palais Garnier is home to the Paris Opera Ballet, considered as one of the world's finest dance companies. The opera house has also become a magnet for mystery and ghost stories owing to some freak accidents and an "underground lake" (actually a giant cistern with canals), giving Gaston Leroux the inspiration for his Gothic novel "The Phantom of the Opera" which spawned popular film and theatre adaptations including Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous 1986 musical.
