About Paris Arc de Triomphe

Nothing trumps the exaltation achieved after you’ve climbed the 280 steps to the top of Arc de Triomphe. Be rewarded by a panoramic view of the Voie Triomphale and the rest of Paris, sparkling in the sunshine or bathed in dusk’s warm light. The names of 660 generals, engravings of numerous French battles, including that of Revolution’s personification, an Amazon-like figure holding a sword aloft in a fierce charge, and the nightly ceremony of honoring the tomb of an unknown soldier, complete an atmosphere of heroic sacrifice in the name of nationalism, triumph, and glory.

Those who fought for France are not forgotten. The Arc de Triomphe is a monument to their bravery and heroism. It is the cornerstone to a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares making up Paris's L'Axe historique. Ordered built by Napoleon in 1806 to commemorate himself and his armies, it is a colossal arch that stands over 51 meters and 45 meters wide (second largest triumphal arch in the world). Designer Jean Chalgrin was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus and had made sure the Arc de Triomphe possessed a nationalistic grandeur that would live on into the future. Indeed, in the following decades, the monument has served as staging point of the country's defiance or triumph: In 1871, after the Prussians marched into Paris in triumph, Parisians lit bonfires under the arch to cleanse the area of German bootprints; then in a spectacular salute to all airmen killed in World War I, Charles Godefrov flew his Nieuport biplane through the arch three weeks after the city's victory parade.
