What To Expect
Oudong was once Cambodia's capital. When that title relocated to Phnom Penh, the area of Oudong returned to simpler life composed largely of small villages, rice farmers and palm wineries. While now it's a calming countryside, Oudong still boasts the impressive Khmer architecture from historic glory days. These majestic temples dot the rumpled hillsides through which our bike trail winds, making our Oudong Escape tour a relaxing day-long retreat into the historic countryside.
We begin the tour by picking you up from your Phnom Penh hotel between 7-7:45 a.m. We'll make a short transfer to a pagoda that stands just outside city limits where we then can take to bicycles.
Cycling along the paved road here, we'll quickly leave behind the city's commotion for the winding dirt roads of the countryside. Rolling hillsides create the backdrop as we cycle through the area's sweeping rice fields and palm trees. These prickly palms often host fermenting palm wine, a Cambodian specialty. The trail continues past the impressive Khmer Temple of the Heavens and into the small villages that today make up Oudong.
Tucked in the valley among green hills, we'll stop at a small village that is built at the base of an impressive temple, indicating Oudong's historical governance. In the authentic market here, we'll lunch on savory fruits, vegetables and Cambodian specialties. If you're up for it, we'll also make our way up the temple's 500 steps for a breathtaking view.
After lunch, we'll continue to cycle through small villages, many of which are elevated on stilts over ponds or flooded rice fields. Escaping again into isolated countryside, we'll also bike along the shores of shallow lakes that often boast blooming lilies and lotus.
As we approach Phnom Penh city limits, the van will meet us to chauffer you back to the hotels. Usually, we will have you back to your hotel around 17:00.
This is a gentle 40 kilometers follows paved roads, some dirt roads, and is suitable for anyone that can ride a bike. The roads are flat, quiet countryside trails pass by many local communities.
We ride as a group, with an experienced cycle guide setting a gentle pace. Stopping often to visit points of interest, we also take the opportunity to sample some of the local food. Our support vehicle follows close behind with plenty provisions. Our guides are knowledgeable on the local area and customs and explain the history, culture and local way-of-life each time we stop.
