What To Expect
Pico da Vara is the highest mountain in Sao Miguel Island, and a cradle of astonishing biodiversity. The mountain is home to the largest remaining stand of the laurisilva forest, the natural habitat of the endangered Azores Bullfinch. If you're lucky, you might catch a sighting of this beautiful bird on our hiking tour!
Feel like you are expoloring many different lands as we navigate through the diverse ecosystems of the island! We begin in the parish of Algarvia, with a slope of 700 meters. Go through a forest of cryptomeria, then see Povocao, the historical arrival point of the first settlers to this island in the 15th century. Afterwards feel like you are entering a savanna as we walk to a trail with grasses and short vegetation, which is the origin of its name, Graminhais.
From here we will hike upwards to the peak of Pico da Vara, which is 1105 meters above sea level!
On our descent, we will pass by the Goreana Tea Factory, the oldest tea factory in Sao Miguel Island. Using only the finest and rare tea leaves endemic to the land, Goreana Tea Factory uses artisan farming methods to create the most eclectic tea on the planet. Since the Azores Islands are free from the pollution like the rest of the world, their teas are 100 percent fresh, organic and immaculate.
Our hike slows down and becomes more relaxing as we descend the same way back to the starting place. Take this opportunity to admire the scenery and bask in bliss, in a paradise where all of your cares will disappear and your mind will be transported to ethereal places.
