In response to a PhocusWright study which measured the behavior and extent of the European travel activities market and how emerging technologies improve upon it, City-Discovery.com reinforced its strategy to expand and build into what it has long seen as a principal area of focus. The study, which has been sponsored by the online traveler activities retailer, states that European travelers spend up to €37 billion on activities, attractions, events and tours, almost 54% larger than the U.S does. This is good news for City-Discovery.com which has long invested into targeting this audience.
"Since City-Discovery.com opened, we have prioritized on multiple language support, especially in major European languages." City-Discovery.com Vice President Wladimir Guez revealed. The website is currently viewable in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch, Greek and Russian.
The study reported that there is a large market for tours and activities, but only a small segment would book online. For instance, twoin three active travelers will shop onthe web, but less than 25% will book activities online. City-Discovery.com plans to address these challenges by increasing and optimizing its web presence. "There are two important factors toconsider here, first the activity provider which is small and fragmented, and second the mobile revolution which is just at its beginning," Guez said.
Many activity providers, the study determined, are small independent businesses which mostly arrange bookings by email. City-Discovery.com has been developing its supplier administration system to reach out and accommodate this important sector. "We have recently launched a platform that will allow our suppliers to check and confirm existing bookings, block out dates and update tour information. Our partners will be able to conveniently and efficiently manage their products and provide accurate information." Guez explained.
Mobile booking continues to grow for in-destination activities but not quite there yet according to the study as data services come with roaming charges and network limitations. But what's also promising is that within the next one to two years, more travelers who own a mobile device are projected to use it to book an activity. With this growing usage in mind, City-Discovery.com continues to optimize their content for their mobile site and app by offering electronic vouchers and accepting last-minute bookings to allow travelers greater flexibility. Such improvements are seen to strengthen City-Discovery.com's position in the European online travel activities market.
Guez said, "Europe is City-Discovery.com's competitive edge and we are keen on exploring new opportunities to meet the diverse tours and activities market demands by enhancing our website, support and accessibility. There is a huge potential for tours and activities to develop in Europe and we intend for City-Discovery.com to be at the forefront."
