About Saint Francis
Assisi is deeply associated with St. Francis. Despite growing up as a nobleman, this famous saint found that his life of luxury did not bring him joy, so he gave his live over to prayer and service to the poor, eventually founding the order of Franciscan monks who follow his example.

One of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy, the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi stands in the location the saint asked to be buried. One of the oldest Gothic churches in Italy, the walls are decorated with frescoes by Cimabue, Giotto and Lorenzetti.
St. Clare Basilica
The Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi is a vision in pink, as it is built out of a local stone with coral tones. Gaze at the many well-preserved frescoes. It is dedicated to Santa Chiara (St. Clare), whose remains are housed in the crypt, where you can also see relics of St. Francis.
St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi
This huge church actually houses a little chapel (known as the Portiuncula, which literally mean 'little portion') which is where St. Francis is said to have found his vocation and dedicated his life to God.
