What To Expect
In the morning, learn the bloody history of the Colosseum, home to gladiators, mock sea-battles, and executions. Spend over an hour inside the amphitheater and then proceed to the Roman Forum, where you will walk along the 'Via Sacra' or 'Sacred Way' - the main avenue through the ancient city, which once sparkled with festivals and triumphal processions as Roman armies returned from war.
Rising above the Colosseum and Roman Forum, see Palatine Hill, the most famous of the Seven Hills of Rome. Romulus and Remus were said to have been found on the Palatine by the she-wolf who nursed and raised them.
After the morning tour, have a break to enjoy lunch, do some souvenir shopping, or simply explore the local area.
After your break, we will whisk you away from central Rome via an air-conditioned coach to the tranquil hills of the Castelli Romani, where centuries-old vineyards and olive groves surround us on all sides. Your guide will share interesting facts and stories about the area. This wine region is called Frascati and the region's most celebrated wine producer, the Pallavicini family, will open their ancient vineyards and wine cellars for our private groups!
The Pallavicini Estate is one of the oldest and most picturesque vineyards in the Frascati region, producing wine since the 1600s. The Pallavicini tradition of excellence in wine production continues to the current day. The estate and its wines have been continually decorated with prestigious international awards - most recently the Decanter World Wine Award, Sommelier Wine Award, Vinitaly Cangrande Award, and Calix Aureus award, confirming the Pallavicini name as the top wine producer of this entire region. Experience over 200 acres of breathtakingly beautiful vineyards, olive trees, and ancient ruins that are a testament to the rich history of the property.
Walk throughout the estate where you will learn about all phases of the Pallavicini wine production and how it evolved from antiquity until today. Step inside stunning 3rd century caverns lined with Acacia and French Oak barrels where wines are stored to age. You'll be surprised to learn that this incredible underground cellar was built into the ruins of an Ancient Roman aqueduct that once passed through this land.
Your visit culminates in a professional tasting lead by the Pallavicini's professional sommelier in a gorgeous 17th century farmhouse in the center of the property. Have the opportunity to try a fine selection of the same wines that earned the Pallavicini family its most recent awards and honors. Experience two red wines, 'Casa Romana' and 'Soleggio', a white wine, 'Poggio Verde,' and the celebrated dessert wine, 'Stillato'. Even have the opportunity to taste the Pallavicini's signature fresh-pressed olive oil with two kinds of bruschetta: plain and with fresh tomatoes.
By covering Colosseum and Roman Forum in the morning and enjoying a pleasant afternoon, learning about the wines of the Castelli Romani area, this Combo is perfect for those who want to visit the Roman countryside and learn about local wines without giving up a visit to the most important monuments of the Eternal City.
