“A really interesting tour with stories and humour and information we would have missed if we hadn't had a tour guide. While I would have liked to spend more time wandering around the catacombs, I appreciate that there was a schedule to keep to. ...Susanna J., United Kingdom – See more reviews
What To Expect
Uncover the Eternal City's ancient secrets as you explore the buried passages, temples and sanctuaries hidden beneath the its bustling modern-day squares and streets.
A private coach will take you from the meeting point to your first stop at one of the Roman Catacombs. Continue to Basilica San Clemente, a 12th-century Basilica, and hear about the clergyman who dug his way through the floor tiles to discover layers of history piled on top of each other. Climb down to see ruins reaching 57 feet deep including a 4th-century church and the 2nd century remains of a shrine to the cult of Mithras. This incredible descent will take you from the current street level, to where it stood at the time of the Emperor Nero for a perspective on the Eternal City you will never forget.
Your next stop is also sure turn your perception around as you enter the ominous Capuchin Crypt, also known as the 'Bone Chapel'. Herein the earthly remains of nearly 4,000 Capuchin monks have been used to decorate what for the brothers is a place of prayer. These skeletons, with their bones decorating almost every square inch, are a vivid reminder of the fleeting nature of life, not to mention one of Rome’s eeriest sights. You'll also be taken through the Capuchin Museum to see Caravaggio's magnificent 'St. Francis in Meditation' and go through the artifacts giving you a glimpse into a Capuchin monk's life.
