Combine a visit to the Pantheon, one of Rome's best-preserved buildings, with an underground tour of the Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata.
Discover the historical treasure that is the Pantheon, considered as one of the most important buildings and symbols of Rome. Commissioned by Marcus Agrippa, it was built as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.
From the Pantheon, walk to Piazza di Pietra (Piazza of Stone) nearby, named for the stones used to built it. Here you will find the Hadrian Temple, commissioned by Antoninus Pius and dedicated to his adoptive father Hadrian.
After this, head to the Church of Santa Maria in via Lata and enter the underground area. Some people claim that St Paul spent two years in the crypt under the church while waiting for this trial. St Peter and his disciple Martial, Paul's secretary Luke, and St John are just some of the figures people claim to have stayed there as well.
In a building under the present church is an oratory which was the first Christian place of worship there. Discover an ancient Roman well filled with pristine waters, which appeared, according to the legend, by the prayers of St Paul while he was imprisoned there. Marvel at the rare and preserved frescoes that your guide will show you during the tour.
