Visit the elegant Spanish Steps and take a tour of the hidden ruins beneath the Trevi Fountain.
Begin at Piazza di Spagna and be greeted by the refined, eighteenth century atmosphere. Marvel at the ochre-colored buildings and the Baroque fountain (Fontana della Barcaccia, or "Fountain of the ugly Boat"), often credited to celebrated Italian artist Bernini. Climb up the monumental Spanish Steps, a 135-step stairway starting at the base of the piazza and leading up to the Church of Trinita dei Monti.
From here, walk to the Trevi Fountain, designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. It is the largest fountain in Rome and one of the most famous in the world. Proceed to the Vicus Caprarius, an ancient alley that will lead you to the underground passage beneath the fountain. Be awed by the huge complex of ancient ruins hidden under Trevi Fountain, some of which even date back to the Roman Imperial age. The preserved site gives us clues as to what life must have been like during one of the most important periods in Rome's history - among the ruins, you will find water cisterns, labyrinth staircases, passages, coins, and statues that are characteristic of the time.
