What To Expect
Piton de la Fournaise, the island's jewel, is accessible via Bourg Murat and La Plaine des Cafres. The region has earned a great gastronomical reputation, namely for its cheese and honey. You'll be crossing amazingly contrasting sceneries to reach the volcano.
Stop at the Nez de Boeuf to see the beautiful view of the Riviere des Remparts. From the Pas de Bellecombe (2311 m), get to admire the Piton de la Fournaise.
Take a Creole lunch then visit the Maison du Volcan (Volcano House). Go on a pedagogical tour of volcanology. The permanent exhibition provides information on the geological formation of the island, on volcano-related risks and the way they are controlled.
