What To Expect
From sea level to 2200m altitude in 27 km!
Enjoy the changing scenery: charming villages, acacia and tamarind forest and the steep cliffs of the incredible viewpoint at Maido where you look down on the cirque Mafate: 9000 hectares of almost untouched wilderness. The entire cirque counts only 700 citizens in 15 small villages. With more than 1000 km of hiking trails, Mafate is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers! From there, you also have a magnificent view of the highest mountain in the Indian Ocean: the Piton des Neiges, the "Peak of the Snows."
On the way back, you can stop at a geranium plantation, a local plant used to create perfume. Traditional production and distillation methods will be demonstrated.
Then continue to the local fruit and handicraft market in St. Paul where you can find a large variety of products typical for the Indian Ocean: Take home a tablecloth from Madagascar, local embroidery, home-made sausages, local hats and purses made out of palm leaves, or just enjoy the smell of spices and aromas while walking through the crowded alleys near the sea.
