What To Expect
You wish to discover the main highlights of the beautiful north region of Argentina on an original way in only three days? This tour is for you! Hop on a 4WD and maximize your time as you explore the main sites with a specialist guide, and live the ancestral traditions of pre-Inca communities. Find out the amazing hospitality of locals at a shelter in Tolar Grande as you sample the best home-made dishes.
Prepare to live a day full of adrenaline, adventure but also nature and calm. We will pick you up at 07:00 from your hotel in Salta's city centre, and we will follow the rail tracks of the stunning Train to the Clouds : at the beginning, this was an amazing technical construction, as it allowed to join Chile through the Andes. Today the train is the best way to get the most beautiful views from the north of Argentina.
Following this road, we will get to El Toro's Gorge: a monumental landscape full of colours and calm. Then we go through El Toro's passageway, where you will get the best panoramic views as you get off the vehicle to walk through the rail tracks: a once in a lifetime experience!
We continue towards the zig zag of the Chorrillos, wich is another strong sensation in your adventure: admire the landscape before arriving to Tastil Ruins. Marvel at the stunning strong vestiges of buildings built by ancient communities that inhabited the region during the pre-Hispanic period. Admire the remains of the old city, witnesses of a pre-Inca past: learn more about their culture and their heritage, and marvel at its amazing adaptations to that hostile environment.
After that you will pass by Del Sitio Museum and Abra Blanca, at 4089 meters above the sea level. Don't miss the fantastic views all around the road and spot some llamas, the local camelids. Visit finally the traditional town of San Antonio de los Cobres, and learn about the traditional culture of this ancient village that adapts to modernity without loosing it's ancestral essence. We will take the opportunity to have a delicious lunch in a local restaurant.
In the afternoon we will continue through route 51, and we will arrive at the highest point of the day (4500 masl)! Get inside a marvellous world that goes to the Desert of the Labyrinth, a desert of fossil dunes of about 10 million years old, with an incredible mix of substances between clay and crystals of gypsum. Then we continue through the Salinas Grandes, the second biggest salt fields in the world: marvel at its immensity and the calm of the environment, and get one of the best views of the Andes.
Finally, at the end of the day we arrive at Tolar Grande. Enjoy a delicious dinner cooked by the locals and spend the night at the Shelter
After breakfast, we will cross the salt desert Salinas Grandes to arrive into a superb hidden oasis. On our way, we will visit El Cono de Arita, 86 kilometers away from Salinas Grandes. This is one of the most uncommon shapes we can find in the Puna, similar to an almost perfect pyramid considered sacred for the local population, and made of a very delicated material.
Admire this natural miracle in the middle of the desert, and continue to Hidden Oasis, a marvellous and innermost space, inhabited by two persons. In this incredible landscape you will have lunch before a sacred -at least for the locals- nap. Short trek with your guide to explore the area. Finally, we go back to Tolar Grande in the evening for dinner and to spend the second night.
Get ready for your last day in this memorable adventure. After breakfast we will take you to a hidden dune around Tolar Grande, which is a great viewpoint in the heart of the Andes. Bask at the calm of the place, and listen to the unique sounds of the Puna as you enjoy the best views.
Then, we will visit the incredible Ojos de Mar, or eyes of sea, wells of water in different colours, between blue and green in the middle of a white Salt Field. The landscape is simply amazing. We will pass by the Desert of the labyrinth once more: take your time to explore it and to discover its magical shapes. Then we will continue our road up to Pocitos, also known as Salvador Mazza, a small village where we will take a snack. After that we will get to San Antonio de los Cobres for lunch, where you will admire the traditional lifestyle of people, as well as the old picturesque houses.
In the early afternoon we will take you through the incredible landscape of Del Toro's Gorge, passing once more by the stunning Tastil Ruins. Then, we will go back to your hotel in Salta's city centre, where we will arrive at about 19:00.
