What To Expect
Appreciate nature on a journey that will take you to the Atacama Salt Flats, the largest salt desert in Chile, and the Chaxa Lagoon, home to three species of beautiful pink flamingos.
The trip continues to the Altiplano, situated 4,300 meters above sea level. The Altiplano gets its name from the word meaning "high plane". Be blown away by the volcanoes in the landscape and the blue waters. Yellow tussock grass is abundant, and the favorite food of the vicunña, a timid llama-like creature that may be seen grazing in the area if one is lucky.
The major highlight of the place is the two lagoons Miscanti and Miñique, which is one of the watering holes of the pink flamingos from the national reserves. These beautiful lagoons were born when the Miñiques Volcano erupted a million years ago, causing stagnation of the water that used to flow into the Atacama Salt Flat, allowing these two lakes with brilliant blue water and pure white sand to rise.
Enjoy lunch at a rustic restaurant in the village that uses ingredients from the ancestral cultural terraces. See the church of San Lucas and its bell tower made of mud and straw in the village of Toconao, a peaceful oasis that preserves San Pedro de Atacama's nature, architecture and traditions.
