What To Expect
Here's a suggested itinerary for exploring this stunning Greek island:
Meet your private guide at the cable car exit in Santorini Port in Fira or at your hotel. Then it's off to your first stop of the day - Caldera Island! A spectacular geological formation, the caldera is the volcanic remains of the original island that collapsed beneath the sea after a volcanic explosion thousands of years ago.
Stand at the edge of the Caldera to pose for pictures against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea. Continue to check out another of the island's volcanic features: a dramatic-looking black-sand beach, Perissa, also known as the longest beach on the island. How you spend your time is up to you - sunbathe on the warm shores and enjoy a bite to eat for lunch, at your own expense, if you wish.
Then, make your way to the peak of Profitis Ilias, Santorini's highest mountain that stands some 2000 feet (600 meters) above sea. Be amazed by the island vistas surrounding you, and then follow your guide inside the ornate Greek Christian monastery perched at the mountain's summit. Walk around the chapel, listen to the monks chanting, and savor samples of the dessert wine, honey and extra virgin olive oil that are made on-site.
Continue with a visit to a traditional Santorini winery where the local assyrtiko and vinsanto wines are produced. Sample up to four glasses of the island's distinctive light and acidic whites while learning how wine is produced in such a dry and unforgiving island environment.
Don't like wine? No worries, you may alternatively visit a local family farm where you can sample the island's unique agricultural volcanic products such as sun-dried tomato, white eggplant, fava split-pea puree and the traditional homemade spoon desserts among others.
If you are both a wine and food lover, you may inform your guide during the tour so you can visit both local farm and winery!
Finally, continue on to the town of Oia where you will find the iconic whitewashed houses so common in postcards. Spend your free time however you wish - stroll around the village, see some sights, go shopping or dine on your own - and meet your guide for the transfer back to your hotel or the cable car exit at the port (for cruise passengers).
