What To Expect
We start the tour with a leisurely bus ride which passes by the charming village of Carmona, La Luisiana and La Carlota on the way to Cordoba.
Only in Cordoba do you get to hear Catholic mass in a mosque! The Moorish history of the place still lives on in the culture and especially the architecture of the place, even after the epic Reconquista. The Mezquita was converted into a Cathedral since 1236 when the Christians finally conquered Granada, the last Muslim state to fall. You will witness an ancient marriage of religion and culture in this Mosque-Cathedral. Although these two religions may seem as different as night and day, they have a common origin in Judaism with Abraham as as a father for both.
Pay homage to the Christian kings in the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos. Alcazar is derived from the Muslim word for fort, castle, or palace, which made its way to the Spanish language because of its deeply rooted heritage in the country. There are two towers, the Tower of the Lions and the Tower of Homage. Admire its Gothic design and travel back in time as you peruse the Roman mosaics and the Roman sarcophagus in the Inquisition Tower.
Finally get the chance to promenade around the Jewish quarter, which is home to the only synagogue in Andalusia. Even the Jewish religious center has a touch of Muslim influence, with medieval architecture that extends to the design of the streets, and even an African souk in the vicinity. Around the site are several shops and restaurants that you can browse at your leisure. This tour will challenge your perspectives of faith, and show you the scope of just how intertwined two things can be when they inhabit the same place.
