Description

Experience Singapore like never before as you explore the Chinatown complex, the largest hawker center in the city consisting of over 220 stalls. A hawker center or "cooked food center" refers to an open-air complex that consists of stalls selling a variety of inexpensive food.

Your knowledgeable local guide will show you the ropes and introduce you to some of the most authentic and delicious Singaporean treats! Enjoy the famous chicken rice along with a delicious serving of poh piah, which are fresh spring rolls. Try some local Chinese delights such as chwee kueh (water rice cake) complemented by freshly crushed, ice-cold sugar cane juice.

While you chow down on your food, your local guide will be sharing with you some Singapore history, information about the city's rich culture and some local know-how on how this food is prepared. Learn how hawker centers came to be and why this tradition is so close to the Singaporeans' hearts.

Afterward, take a stroll through the wet market to explore local food sources. Check out some interesting livestock and fresh ingredients used in our local food. Next, hit the streets of Chinatown. Learn about the history of the early migrants in this area and how they came to settle and build their lives here. Experience also how people from all kinds of places live in harmony in Chinatown as you visit some religious sites dotted along the same street.

Take a respite from the outdoor heat with a visit to the air-conditioned Urban Redevelopement Authority (URA) gallery to understand how the city planners built Singapore from a humble fishing village to a great cosmopolitan city!

Finish up the tour with a freshly brewed teh or kopi tarik (pull tea/coffee), along with a tasty roti prata (flour-based pancake). Your local guide will share with you some final bits of knowledge and some tips for the rest of your stay in the magical city of Singapore!

You'd think Singapore would be an easy city to navigate, and to an extent it is. But to really understand the city, and actually have a local who can explain all the delicious things I was eating was such a bargain. Add to that a serve of what living in Singapore is like, it was the best money I spent all trip.

Excellent tour with Rene. Learnt heaps and had a great day.

CityDiscovery

Best thing we did in Singapore.

CityDiscovery

Renee was an excellent guide - I was lucky enough to have a one-on-one tour with him through Chinatown and his in depth knowledge,... sense of fun, and fantastic taste in food made the afternoon perfect! If you only have a day or two in Singapore, and want to ensure you get to understand the culture, history, and people, and get to try all the hawker must-eats this is the tour for you. more

Rene was great and really immersed us into Singaporean food culture, along with history about Singapore itself. Fab day, couldn...39;t stop smiling the whole time. more

CityDiscovery

This trip exceeded my expectations. Our guide Rene was excellent on this half day tour - he took us to some wonderful food venues,... managed to improvise to cater for my vegetarian diet, and he was very interesting and knowledgable when we visited temples, markets and the Singapore City Gallery. He even forgave us for visiting for such a short time! The gallery was a revelation - I had no idea Singapore had such a fascinating urban history. I unreservedly recommend Rene's tour. Family friendly, not too much walking Bring: a camera culturally sensitive clothing (i.e. no tank tops - preferably 3/4 or long sleeves - and nothing above the knee) an empty tummy more

CityDiscovery

excellent and informative guide, learn't lots about Singapore

CityDiscovery

As soon as I saw the name of the tour, I was sold! Who doesn't want to have someone lead them through a Hawker Market, which ...can be a tad daunting with the amount of people, smells and especially choosing where to eat! Rene knew exactly where to take us and catered for everyone's tastes. Not only did Rene have us try some local delicacies, like Hainanese Chicken and Popiah, he was a wealth of knowledge and so engaging, you really got a great understanding of Singapore and her people. 10/10 would recommend! more
