What To Expect
Rila Monastery is a must-see sight in Sofia. The unique combination of arcaded balconies, unique frescoes (a work of one of the most famous Bulgarian Revival Period painters), gilded iconostasis and the fabulous mountain views makes the visit to the monastery an extraordinary and memorable one. While there, you have the option to enter the main church, take photos of the narthex's gallery, and admire the exhibits in the History Museum of the Monastery. Don't forget to try the tasty "mekitsi" (Bulgarian donuts) with buffalo's yogurt (a local specialty).
The frescoes in the Boyana Church bring epochal change in the mural painting and is are considered to be predecessors of the European Renaissance. The majority of the 240 figures depicted there have individuality and vitality.
