About Split

Split is one of the oldest cities in Croatia, dating back at least 1700 years, and may be as old as 2400 years if some ancient archaeological evidence is to be believed. Split has exchanged hands and owners many times throughout its long and storied history, with rulers that span the historic European powers, going from the Romans to the Venetians, from the Austrians to the Italians. Today it is the second largest city in the country, and home to a wide array of historic sites across many eras. Travel to Split, an incredible World Heritage Site of different empires and civilizations, and immerse yourself in history with our tours and activities in 2015.

Go on a Split Historic Walking Tour with Guide and learn about the vast, sprawling history of this city with a professional guide. Visit Diocletian’s Palace, constructed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian as a place he could retire to. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forming the historic city center of Split, the palace was, among other things, the residence of the empire, a fortress, and a small town unto itself. Enter its cellars and learn more about the history of the structure. Admire the Peristyle, a central court, and pass through the stylish Golden and Silver Gates. Go on to the Cathedral of St. James, or Sibenik Cathedral, and be amazed by a beautiful array of tall wooden doors with wood carvings of Jesus Christ’s life, Romanesque pews from the 13th century, and artistic works on the religious altars. This was originally designed to be the mausoleum of Diocletian, and now is the center of the Catholic Church’s diocese of Sibenik in Croatia. Finally, enter the Temple of Jupiter, built by Diocletian under the belief that he was a reincarnation of the chief Roman god. This Temple is one of the best-preserved of the Roman temples.
