Venture out to the water's edge for an evening of opera in a a pop-up opera house complete with purpose-built bars and restaurants, a grandstand under the stars, and a floating stage. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour promises to bring you the best of Sydney - lovely music, superb wine and the best Sydney Harbour sunset views.
This 2017, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour presents Carmen, a story of opera's favorite femme fatale walking fearlessly towards a fate written in the cards.
Carmen stamps her feet, tosses back her hair and draws you into her world. Men fall instantly under her spell. Soldiers patrol, factory girls seduce shamelessly, glittering bullfighters parade and dancers pirouette their way across the stage in this vivacious and vivid production. Hear the sultry "Habanera" and other famous Spanish tunes fill the night air with Spanish rhythms and fiery passion.

There is no mandatory dress code but this is an outdoor show with no covered seating. The event is an all-weather experience and Opera Australia is committed to going ahead with a performance of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour even in doubtful or unfavorable weather conditions. Please come prepared so that you are as comfortable as possible, and ready to support the performers, who will carry on singing in the rain.
Guests are recommended to arrive early to avoid rushing. Ushers will close the doors at show time and may not allow latecomers in until there is a suitable pause in the performance.
Many operas are performed in other languages - most often Italian or French; there are surtitle screens above the stage with translations.
