What To Expect
Explore Tirana at your leisure. Overnight in Tirana.
We will guide you around 3 cities. In Tirana, your first stop will be Skanderbeg Square, named after the Albanian hero, and the main landmark of the city. Visit the Et'hem Bey Mosque which pilgrims go to offer prayers. We'll take you to the Clock Tower, the Palace of Culture, the monument to Mother Albania and the National Historical Museum, which are some significant places every visitor must see.
You have the afternoon free to explore the city on your own.
From Tirana, we will take you to Pogradec, one the must see places in Albania. We will take the Roman via Egnatia route to the east and drive through Elbasan (ancient Scampa). We'll have a short stop there for you to see its fine Ottoman walls before continuing on to Pogradec.
Visit Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest freshwater lakes in Europe. It is home to a number of fish and birds found nowhere else in the world. Have lunch in a local restaurant in Drilon, at a nice spot not far from Ohrid Lake, decorated with willow trees and streams flowing into the lake. Overnight in Pogradec.
From Pogradec, we drive on to Korca. Go on a brief sightseeing tour there and visit the Archaeological Museum housed in a lovely wooden Ottoman house, as well as the Museum of Medieval Art where you can see paintings and icons made by famous local artists. You'll also get to go to the architecturally important 15th century Mirahorit Mosque and the Old Bazaar.
After that, drive into the pine-forested mountains to the rough little rural settlement of Voskopoja. It is a well-known center of art, where some of the most talented Albanian painters practiced their profession. Visit the Church of Shen Kollit, notable for its frescoes made by different famous Albanian painters. Then drive back to Korca, where you will spend the night.
From Korca, depart for Gjirokastra - also know as the Museum City. The houses there form medieval towers, hence their city's distinct architecture. You will visit the Castle and the Museum of Weapons. Overnight in Gjirokastra.
This day, leave Gjirokastra to go to Saranda, the hillside town facing the sea. It is famous for the magnificent Butrinti archaeological site. Visit the "Blue Eye" spring formed by underground springs, and the unusual Church of St. Nicholas at Mesopotam with its fine carvings of mythological beasts.
You may have lunch at the Lekursi Castle Restaurant (optional), which is built on the ruins of an old castle. After lunch, you'll have some free time to explore the place on your own. Overnight in Saranda.
Explore Saranda. Go on an excursion to the Butrinti Archaeological Site, the Temple of Aesclepios, the Baptistery, Nymph, the Theatre, Lion's Gate, and the Acropolis. After this, you will have the rest of the day to explore on your own, or just relax. Overnight in Saranda.
After breakfast, drive up to the Albanian Riviera. Make a short stop at the bay of Porto Palermo where the castle of Ali Pasha is. Drive along Himara, the Dhermi coastline and then stop for lunch in a restaurant in Llogara (optional) where you can also enjoy the wonderful pinewood scenery.
After lunch, travel to Vlora, a historically important coastal city where you will be spending the night.
Go on a tour around Vlora before proceeding to the ancient Greek settlement of Apollonia, founded in 588 BC. After that, go to Ardenica where you'll get to see the medieval monastery surrounded by stonewalls. Admire Marry Church and the Saint Triadha Chapel.
Then travel to Berat where you will spend the night.
Go on a morning tour of the marvelous city of Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows. Visit the lovely painted Mosque of the Bachelors, and explore the Tekke of the Helvetis with its beautiful portico. Then head off to Onuphri Icon Museum. It holds some of Onuphri's finest works, as well as the works of other outstanding Albanian artists. Stop at a restaurant in the Fortress where you will enjoy a rustic lunch. The Berat cellar will be open for wine tasting (optional).
Continue to Durres. It is the ancient Greco-Roman port city of Dyrrachium, formerly called Durrazzo, and one of the oldest towns in Albania. See its Byzantine city walls, the Roman amphitheater and the Archaeological Museum. Overnight in Durres.
Go to Kruja - one of the biggest cities in Northern Albania. Kruja is the "city of history" and best known as hometown of Albania's National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Kruja offers many quality restaurants with magnificent views of the countryside below it. Visit the Castle, the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. You will be given time to explore the Old Bazaar before proceeding to Shkodra where you will visit the Mosque of Plumbit and the castle of Rosafa over the lake of Shkodra - perched at more than 4000ft above sea level.
As this is your last night, you will have the opportunity to bid your travel companions "mirupafshim". Delectable cuisine, sparkling wine, fashionable restaurant - all before you leave Albania and the people you got to visit this beautiful country with. Overnight in Tirana.
