Standing on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures, Japan's most famous symbol and highest peak can be viewed from several locations and can also be reached by coach from Tokyo or by the popular Shinkansen bullet train. Go up to the 5th station halfway up the mountain on a day trip, make it one stop in a long vacation from Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya, or (when in season) climb up to the summit and witness the breathtaking sunrise. Discover UNESCO World Heritage Site Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration.
The most popular way to experience Mount Fuji's splendor is on a day trip from Tokyo which actually takes you halfway up the mountain. Visit the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station which, at 2,300 meters above sea level, offers a view of the summit as well as views of the Fuji Five Lakes below. Enjoy the sights, grab some refreshments, shop for souvenirs and visit the Komitake Shrine. Hikers climbing to the peak can stock up on supplies before heading for the Yoshida Trail.
During official climbing season (around July to August), the hiking trails to Mount Fuji's peak open up to travelers wishing to witness the sun rise over the Land of the Rising Sun. All in all an itinerary spanning two days, hikes usually start in the afternoon from any of the 5th stations halfway up the mountain with a stop to dine and sleep at a mountain hut near the top. The hike to the peak of Mount Fuji starts out late in the evening allowing for enough time to reach the summit and witness a truly breathtaking sunrise.
Hakone, a resort town in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is famous for its onsen hot springs and ryokans (traditional Japanese inns). Mount Fuji can be viewed from a boat cruising Lake Ashi or from a ropeway cable car going up Mount Hakone or Mount Komagatake.
Traveling by Shinkansen from Tokyo to the direction of Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka? Grab a seat by the right-hand side of the bullet train and keep an eye out for Mount Fuji as you approach the area around Shin-Fuji Station, about 40-45 minutes into the journey.
Only 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Tokyo, Mount Fuji can be seen from the city center and Yokohama on clear days. Climb up to the observation decks of Tokyo Skytree (Japan's tallest structure) which can offer a good view of the mountain.
The best close distance views of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes - Kawaguchiko, Yamanakako, Saiko, Shojiko and Motosuko.
Lake Yamanaka is a spectacular spot to behold the rare "Diamond Fuji" - a phenomenon that can be witnessed only from certain spots and on certain winter days. Catch that fleeting moment when the sunset or sunrise aligns perfectly with Mount Fuji's peak, setting off beams of light like a sparkling diamond.
Lake Kawaguchi meanwhile boasts of the classic image of Mount Fuji reflected on its waters depicted in the famous "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" landscape prints by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai.

Endo-San was waiting for us at the appointed time in our hotel, he is truly fluent and an excellent guide and we had a knowledgeable and fun day. The other thing that was memorable was our udon lunch in a small restaurant (inn?) which was both delicious and good value. We ended the wonderful day with 45 minutes in an onsen - my first in an open-air onsen, looking at Mt Fuji. Of course thanks to God who gave us perfect weather and thus a marvellous view of the mountain. I would recommend Endo-San to anyone traveller.
Yoshi was an excellent guide. He showed us around well and was a good source of information. We would like to thank him very much.
I cannot overstate how much I LOVED this tour. I am usually not a tour group person, but this was the best way to get to Mt. Fuji, as well as Aokigahara (the Sea of Trees). The tour guides, Kats and Toshi, were excellent, very polite and informative, as well as easy to understand. There were only 3 of us that went to the forest and cave (and guide), which was perfect. The cave was beautiful, and definitely a favorite of my trip. Warning: the spelunking is definitely for able bodied people and is very physical. I really enjoyed my group I was with, and the day was beautiful. I had a wonderful time! Thank you!!!
We booked this tour at the last minute and we lucked out because the weather was perfect that day (Apr 7/18). The pictures we took looked as if we were photo-shopped in with the mountain! At first, the bus took us higher up, closer to the summit. That wasn't exciting because it was quite windy and cold up there, and you couldn't get a good picture of the mountain. Actually we were quite disappointed, and probably so were many people in the bus. After about 15 minutes, they drove us down to a little town at the foot of the mountain for lunch. There we got to see the whole mountain in its grandeur! And we were so pleased! Lunch was very good and plentiful. Great service. I'd advise buying the lunch package so you don't waste time waiting in line to order food on your own. On the way back the itinerary changed a bit due to high winds on the water. We were supposed to go on the lake, instead they drove us to visit Hakone. That didn't bother us since we've already had the chance to take all the good photos of the mountain. I highly recommend this tour.
We had a great day! Though the bus arrived late for almost an hr for the pick up time- the tour guide KIM manage to make up the time we've missed. You need someone like Kim- the Korean guy in your company, he did a great job!
Great tour , very patient tour leader, courteous driver. Surely give us memorable moment at Japan. Outstanding tour
